Yes I saw the movie yesterday evening after Ishiguro won the prize. It was a pleasant film to watch but I didn't think the story in itself was that impressive to be honest. Does anyone know how the book compares to the movie?

By the way, it's great to see moviechat getting it's first own post on this one! I just registered myself now after migrating from imdb. I hope that these fora will give me as much insight into movies as imdb used to.

The book is better of course, as it is 98% of the time. Seeing the character's thoughts on the page worked better than having an actor overplaying it all.

And yes, Hopkins did overplay it. He gave a star-turn performance for a character who isn't even the star of his own life story.

Interesting.

I didn't read that particular book but I've read other books by Ishiguro. He's a phenomenal writer but I can see why his mastery wouldn't translate to the screen all that well.
