Halloween or Christmas movie or both?

I'm currently having the debate with my partner. I personally think it could work as both. Opinions?

reply

The film has little to do with Halloween, it starts off November 1st after Halloween and the whole film is about Jack wanting to take over Christmas, and ends on Christmas day.

Oddly Henry Selick calls it a halloween movie, while Tim Burton calls it a Christmas movie.

reply

True, but a big theme is Halloween: the imagery, the characters, the mood. It's much more Halloweenish than Christmasy.

It's certainly watchable during either holiday.

You are sin.

reply

The theme isn't about Halloween, they hardly spend any time talking or dealing with it. They're making christmas, in their own weird way.

The imagery and characters loosely.. by hollywood standards yes.
Not sure about the mood, i don't associate Halloween with people signing and dancing about christmas. lol

Although in the film the end result was Christmas has turned into a second halloween with with gruesome toys and gifts instead or tricks and pranks.
But the film was released during November.. the aftermath of Halloween and the build up to Christmas.

But to be honest, i watch the film whenever i feel like it lol last time i watched it was in spring a few years back :P

Ahh, but that's the plot. Yes, Christmas is a theme, but we spend far more time in the Halloween world, and they even transform Christmas to fit with Halloween tropes.

There are some Halloween songs; heck, the movie starts with one. And there are scary dark moments as well.

reply

Well there's one Halloween song, and several Christmas song.
It's doesn't matter if it's set in Halloween world., there are many Christmas movies which are set in the real world but are still about Christmas.

Ahh, but that's the plot.

Exactly, hence it's a Christmas movie, it even has Santa/Jack making presents, delivering presents.

No don't recall the film being dark or scary.

But the Christmas songs aren't jolly and folly. They're closer in tone to the Halloween song. Lots of bass, crazy strings, all the creepy Halloween characters. Heck, even "What's This," the only song set in Christmas town has Halloween imagery in it: monsters, throwing heads, things under the bed.

It's doesn't matter if it's set in Halloween world.,

It does matter because, like I said, Halloween is a big theme. So the look of the world/movie is predominately Halloween.

Creatures hiding under beds, grandma being attacked by a wreath, Jack's creepy faces at the camera, Jack's destroyed sled.

No, they're not super scary, but these are intended as dark scenes.

I never said it wasn't a Christmas movie. But it is also a Halloween movie. Due to all the imagery and theme and tone. I did say it's watchable during either holiday.

reply

Well we'll have to agree to disagree.

I don't believe Tim Burton or Henry Selcik intended any of the film to be dark, it was full of joy and life and fun and quirky characters, exactly how they intended it to be.

reply

It also had creepy images and a guy trying to boil and eat Santa Claus.

Burton and Selcik are known for dark imagery in their movies. They've built careers on them.

Yes, along with the dark moments I've mentioned.

Oh right, in the 25+ years I've been following every inch of their careers i never knew this........

I'd say it's definitely a Christmas movie. The whole thing is about Jack wanting to do Christmas for a change and is a build up to Christmas. About making toys, reindeer to fly a sleigh, making a suit, delivering toys, etc.

However with it being about monsters doing Christmas it has a darker feel to it so it can easily be watched during Halloween as well.

I really like the movie and can watch it anytime but watch it a couple times usually around both Halloween and Christmas

reply

It could definitely work as both, maybe it should be shown somewhere between halloween and christmas.

Though i'd say its more of a halloween movie all be it a childs one.

I am the son of a man named Tom.

Finally rewatched the movie after so many years, and I believe it's a Christmas movie WITH elements of Halloween. That being said, feel free to view it during both holidays if that's your thing.

reply

Both, but I always watch it in December. You might could always use it in November as a bridge between Halloween and Christmas.

reply

Well it's October again and a bunch of stations are playing it. And I've heard it will be playing in December as well.
So I guess the debate is still open.

reply

It's most certainly a Christmas movie as it is heavily about the Christmas spirit.
