You’ve probably heard some of the rumors swirling around about what an ass Bill Murray was on the set of Groundhog Day — in fact, it led to a 21-year rift between Murray and director Harold Ramis. Murray, as Dreyfus tells it, was an Irish drunken bully who at one point screamed in Dreyfus’ face and threw an ashtray at him. (People)

The reason why Bill Murray is so good at playing sarcastic, self-centered assholes is probably because he is one.

The Irish people I've met who are actually from Ireland have been chill and polite, Irish-Americans I've found generally to be obnoxious assholes.

Well, they didn't get the best greeting to America. Insults and bricks were hurled at them. Indentured servitude galore. Subhuman social status. etc...

Yeah, but they were used to it and expected it.
Many Irish expected "the new world" to be different until they got off the boat.
