Similarities with a Kirk Douglas movie

You're probably thinking I'm going to mention Lonely Are the Brave. No, that's not the one I was thinking of. There was a Western that Kirk Douglas made. Like Michael's character, his character was estranged from his wife. He was holding onto the past, like Michael's character. Lastly, in the end,
Kirk Douglas' character purposely goes into a gunfight in the end with an unloaded gun to get himself killed. He also wants to make sure his daughter is taken care of. At the end of Falling Down, he gets himself killed by pulling out a water gun and wants to see that his daughter is taken care of.
. Does anyone know what Western I'm referring to? I don't want to give anything away.

This would be The Last Sunset co-starring Rock Hudson & Carol Lynley? I distinctly remember Douglas's character in the end, breaking open his Derringer to check loads before walking out to meet Hudson, only later to see it was unloaded.
