The film shows quite early on that all is not well with the Mitchells. The President is photographed with his wife on the lawn with their dogs. The moment they step inside the actual White House, he throws down the dogs' leads in disgust and walks away, as does the First Lady. Both walk in opposite directions, not a word spoken. This marriage is a sham. Great scene.

That's one of the lovely things about movies and the visual arts, as opposed to books. You can tell such a story, tell the viewer everything they need to know about two people, just by having the camera follow them down the hall.
