Wednesday can’t smile?

If I understand correctly, the film pretends that Wednesday can’t smile; her attempt to smile seems rather creepy, which is the intention of this scene. In the first film, however, she smiles normally and delightedly when Uncle Fester brings her and Pugsley the utensils for the play. Am I missing something?
