English Bob - What was the point?

His character didn't add anything of significance to the story, and dragged down the pacing of the film.

Moreover, Beauchamp was just really annoying.

English Bob is the essence of what this movie is about. Plus, Richard Harris practically steals the show and I appreciate every second that he is in the movie.

English Bob (whilst having less screentime than other characters) is pivotal to the movies theme of 'stripping away reputation'
Munny is trying to forget his.
Bill is trying to (re)enforce his.
Bob is snuggly content to live off his.

Throughout the course of the movie, each characters past deeds are placed under a microscope...and are soon found to be less heroic than history had believed. These were bad times (brought about primarily by bad deeds)

It helped that English Bob's 'vignette' was acted to perfection by Harris (ably supported by Saul Rubinek)

If anything, I felt Morgan Freeman's character was the weak link here (whilst still a great performance) he was essentially the black sidekick, (and little else)
