NETHERWORLD is one of the better Full Moon movies

There was a time when FULL MOON was at the top of its game, predominantly between 1986 and 1992. Charles Band was imaginative and innovative, one of those auteurs who mastered the art of filming visual and exciting horor, science fiction and eclectic sci-fi/horror movies on a economical budget, in the path of all-time great B horror master, Roger Corman.

If you enjoyed horror movies that were different, slower-paced, methodical, and relyed on mystery, plot, surprise and far less on gore and splatter, then NETHERWORLD was one of the best. It's an occult supernatural tale based on preumably old Cajun voodoo-like black magic and necromancy down in the deep bayous of Louisiana on a capacious outback plantation. A young man, estranged from his father, is called back to the plantation upon the death of father, not just to inherit the property, but to carry out the dead father's dark occult plan for resurrection.

I consider Charles Band's lower tech, less special effects, more visual and story-telling and minimal gore and splatter, to be superior to the snuff films of today like SAW and HOSTEL. That's not to say there was no violence and blood in this movie and other Full Moon films, but less is more and the movie did not revolve around it.

I enjoyed it. I got the DVD!

I like it, but honestly its not one of my more favorite Full Moon films. And that's excluding the PUPPET MASTER flicks.

I thought this film was okay. I dug the flavorsome evocation of the Louisiana setting, but the slow pace and uneventful story made it a bit of a tedious chore to get through.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

***SPOILERS***

Haven't seen a horror flick quite like this before. I too enjoyed it, overall .. I think.

The ending did not click with me at all. It seemed to get very Hellraiser all of a sudden, with Corey's father doing his best Uncle Frank imitation. I did like the parrot version of him though, very cool.

What was the purpose of the flying demon hand? Did I miss something? I thought maybe it was Corey's fathers hand, protecting Delores and doing her bidding, or was it Beauregard's? It was cool regardless, though also not sure it belongs on the DVD cover as this story has much more to do with bad souls trapped in birds, then killer flying hands.

Too many questions left over by the end! What was the point of the ghouls in the basement? Was Delores good or evil? If she was good was Mrs. Palmer evil? Did Delores corrupt Corey and Diane and that's why they are all hanging out like nothing happened at the end? If that is the case was the father trying to stop Delores? Why was Beauregard not able to shake hands? How did the director learn to spin a bottle on his finger like that? And what the hell was that neon green drink anyway?

I'm glad you asked all these question. I wish I could think of any theory, but I think the movie is just as bad as it looks. It can make great movies when questions are left unanswered, but this one give us no clues at all, so it really looks like the director just want a bunch of *beep* going on and call it cinema, when it reality it simply is dumb to throw a bunch of nonsense to the screen.

The thing is I didn’t think Delores was evil, a witch yeah, but I don’t think she was the bad “guy” in all of this. Yeah she did a few questionable things but she was attacked by that crazy Cajun guy who she told to leave in the beginning who tried to have his way with her so she could be forgiven that. He had it coming & it was debatable whether “she” did it or the hand acted on it’s own which I believe it did. She did make the other lady blind but only temporarily. When she found out what the father really wanted to do by taking over his son, she wasn’t on board with that because it’s obvious he double crossed her in that regard & she was surprised. What was supposed to happen I can’t even guess.

The hand thingie was “The Hand of Satan” or so it was called. Whether or not it actually “was” the hand of Satan is anybodies guess or suffice it to say a supernatural thing that killed people and ghosts. In fact I don’t believe that Delores was in control of it at all so theres that.

Well I thought the dad at the end was a ghost not a tangible being, & that it was more of a dream sequence if anything in the sons mind, but if he got put into the bird I guess he was then substance if he got attacked by the hand & everything. But at the same time I think the hand could attack anything in our world & of the supernatural one.

Not a very good movie, & I’ve always wondered what became of Denise Gentile. Full Moon used to be a thing back in the 80’s, not so much anymore but it was nice while it lasted.

this movie should be erased from the DVD stores, it has a plantation as the main story plot area which can be offensive to many people,
horror or not, it's time to retire this type of racism in movies
