One of the best baseball movies EVER.

This movie captures the passion and essence of baseball like possibly no other movie. I'd rank it right up there with The Sandlot in terms of great baseball flicks.

so agree O.P. ! No matter how many times they run this movie on cable, I will watch...and laugh...and cry each and every time.

reply

I would agree...except for that ending. Dottie throwing the world series on account of her immature, jealous sister's poor little feelings ruined the whole thing for me. Just ugh. Dotted was SO selfish at the end. She failed her entire team when she threw the game, and the fact that she was smiling at the end... Sigh. I still get angry because right up until that ending I LOVED the movie. Such a shame. There's no crying in baseball. If dottie's stupid lil sister couldn't take losing to her older sister, she should never have played the sport. And if dottie couldn't set aside her feelings towards her sister and play with all she's got she should've never joined up. They're both idiots in the end. Just my opinion, guess you can tell I feel strongly about this, lol.

Throwing the world series? You obviously think she dropped the ball on purpose, she didn't. If she wanted to throw the game why wouldn't she of just struck out instead of driving home the leading run in the previous half inning?

reply

Not just one of the best baseball movies.

One of the best sports movies.

reply

One of, yes. For me the all time best is Field of Dreams. Could be due to gender (I'm male), not because this movie is women's baseball, but because of the son/dad dynamic of FOD.

Field of Stupidity is THE worst baseball movie EVER made. There are dozens better. Tops is The Natural. Even the worst of the Major League movies is far better than that cornfield trash. Kevin Costner should seriously repent of it after doing the brilliant Bull Durham.

reply

Wow, this comment pisses me off quite a bit. Haha.

Your opinion really sucks balls on this one.

Field of Dreams is incredible! Very touching and well made movie! Major League is one of the best and funniest baseball movies ever! With an opinion like that, there is no hope for you.

At least we agree on Bull Durham and The Natural being great baseball flicks.

A League of Their Own belongs right up there too as one of the best! Funny, exciting, emotional, the whole package.

reply

A League... is a very good movie. Field of Dreams, I liked a lot more when I first saw it, but on re-watching didn’t hold up as well. Constner’s character was too annoyingly crazy.

reply

Imo Field of Dreams is an excellent movie but at the same time I can understand the criticism of this movie. At times the concept behind it feels a bit artificial and parts of the story feel underdeveloped. It is flawed but I still love it.

A League of their Own is great btw. Nowadays I prefer it over Field of Dreams.

reply

It makes my top ten favorite baseball movies despite so many familiar elements right down to "the big game" climax. I never even knew there had been an AAGPBL until I saw this.

Agreed, it's a wonderful film, it's right up there alongside the best imo.

I agree. But also a really great movie on its own. I only began to recognise that after seeing it a few months ago for the first time in many years. Very well directed, written and acted. Much better probably than many of the "big" movies of the 90's.

Very well directed, written and acted.

Well, two out of three ain't bad...

It was well directed and written, but there is some truly abysmal acting in this. Worst is Tracy Reiner as Betty Spaghetti. Just horrible. The scene when she gets the telegram that her husband was killed in the war should have been heartbreaking but it just sucked. I can't stand Rosie O'Donnell but her reaction to the telegram was far better than Reiner's. Hey, I'm an older dude and I tear up watching a lot of movies, but that telegram scene just died a slow stinking death. It's odd because any movie Tom Hanks is in (last 20 years) features outstanding actors and supporting actors. I don't dislike Gina Davis, but she was mostly terrible in this as well. Some of her expressions and line deliveries were brutal. I don't understand what the hell happened. This wasn't a zero budget film.

Before anyone gets it in their heads that I hate this movie and am just trolling, be aware that other than the issues I mentioned, I love this film. It's a great story, it's based on American history, and it does have some great performances in it. I watch this movie whenever it's on TV and put it in my top 10 of all sports movies. It's because I love it so much that just makes me weep at what it could have been.

reply

It's a great film and for me to say that about just about any sports film takes a lot. I'd say that the original Bad News Bears is a better baseball film and Breaking Away is the best sporting film ever made but after that this comes in third overall. I don't know much beyond the basics of baseball but this film makes the game seem legitimately interesting.
