I thought that maybe by stabbing the cross and renouncing God, he became the world's first vampire ever. Then everyone he bites, becomes one after, but I thought maybe this is how the first one came about.
But how did he know that he would arise from the dead and wreak havoc on the world like he said he would? How did he know that his renouncing, would give him superpowers. How did he know blood would come out of the statues, and instead of being surprised by this, he drinks it, like he was expecting it to happen?
I saw that scene as a metaphor for his damnation. It is a defilement of Christianity and jesus with his blood giving eternal life. Vlad turns on his faith and is given eternal damnation instead. I didn't see it as him becoming a vampire then and there but completely losing himself to his rage and grief and becoming the legendary Vlad the impaler. The first vampire happens gradually as the evil takes over later on. Vlad is a very Christian obsessed man whose love for his wife is so great he turns from that passionate faith, betrays god and is punished for it.
I don't think he knew everything that would happen, and he honestly looks shocked when blood pours from the cross. I just think Elisabeta is gone now. He can never see her or be with her again. That anguished scream alone tells you how devastated Vlad is over losing his soulmate. By losing Elisabeta he has lost his humanity, and the pure monster takes over. He doesn't care anymore and whatever happens happens.
