i think this movie is racist

i'm probably the last person to point out that something is racist but this movie makes it obvious.

these are the only white people in the whole movie:

1. waitress in the beginning, (M. Lawrence said she was racist, made her look like a jackass)
2. salesman at clothing store, (again made him a racist and made him look like a complete *beep*
3. 4 brute guys carrying grace jones in her premier. these guys were chained and treated like reindeer.

those were the only white people in the movie. to me, it seemed the makers of the movie went out of their way to send a message.

loved the movie, hilarious. love eddie, love martin, love david alan grier, but i think this movie is racist.

i think it is very unfortunate that many races have been through racism is recent history, but please, it's a 2way street and we need to kill the whole idea of racism. i know, impossible, but it doesn't mean we can't try.

God bless!!!!!

I disagree and here is why:

There were a lot of white people elegantly holding drinks at the premeire before Grace Jones makes her appearance. Also, on the plane there are white people taking a flight. And do not forget the gym Eddie and his friends workout in. And lastly, the Mardi Gras party shows white people having fun in a nightclub.

The two encounters of racism involving the waitress and clerks are instances that still happen today. The point was to highlight these occurences. The white men pushing the chariot, who knows why? But does this matter?

I just watched the movie, "The Searchers" starring John Wayne. If you want to see racism, watch it. Everyperson, be their race Native American, Swedish, or Norwegian is either a savage or a moron. However, white people always remain angelic. This movies is one of the greatest films of American cinema.

In the movie, "Boomerang", the main cast is African-American. The movie chooses to showcase events that occur by highlighting racism. No matter how successful a person is, there is always going to be opposition. Unfortunately, some high end places will still treat African Americans in such a way.

The rest of the white people depicted in this film, are acting in adult manners of fun and social interaction.

It's funny because from the 20s to the present, African Americans and appear as atmosphere in films. However, their roles largely consist of the following:

Fat, loud, cheerful, stupid housekeeper and cook (usually female role)
the poor beggar/drunk
criminals/street thug
the deaf eared servant/waiter
bellmen/door holder at hotels/and the elevator operator
crooked cop/racist cop
the gifted, stupid athlete with animallike skills
drug addicts/wife beaters
pimps/(See the 2006 Oscar's nominee for Best Male Actor)
drug pushers
the standard black clothes
ski cap rapist
Men and women of animallike braun and no brains
Sex Addicts, men and women have no self control (roommate in First Daughter)
broken english mother with low income job (TV Scripts)
pregnant, arrogant teen mom
the convict who is innocent/convict who is guilty
the funny man, sidekick with his genius partner (usually white).

I may have missed some but these are the usual characters for African Americans in movies. "Soul Plane" was the worst. This movie went above and beyond stereotypes across the racial board.

The white Americans in the atmosphere cast have dignity at all times in the film. As in life, racism is still alive. The two examples of racist encounters are real and the filmmaker chose to highlight that. The four men and the chariot, I am not sure about. I am still figuring this one out. Overall, this movie is definitely not racist.

I agree....there are other movies that promote this same kind of racism...for example...

Where were all the WHITE SLAVES in Roots and Amistad??????

And in Malcolm X, why couldn't they have some WHITE NATION OF ISLAM MEMBERS....dayum Spike Lee's revisionist history...white men can wear bow ties too....Paul Simon, Tucker Carlson...racial!!!

And it's not just black and white...what were all those Asians doing in Memoirs of a Geisha....racial....

black man always trying to keep the white man down...

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men.

If you listen to the commentary on the dvd (which cost me only $7.64 at best buy) with Reg Hudlin himself, which is brilliant by the way in pointing out a million more things I never picked up. Besides those parts, he explains that martin's character tyler has a paranoia when it comes to white ppl, mostly pointed out in scenes with the waitress and the pool table scene. He also added that the salesman scene was nothing more than a joke. This is def a pro black movie, where Reg hooked up even some of his friends and family with last minute replacement roles. Someone probably said what I already said anyway, but I didn't feel like reading through everyone's stuff. I just wanted to share what I found out from watching and listening to the movie with Reginald Hudlin's commentary. If you do the same, you might want to view with the subtitles as well.

I think you are completely wrong. While yes, this whole scenario is impossible--a (possibly) fortune 500 company, that is completely run, staffed, etc. by black people, and almost all of the people that the characters interact with are black from the guy selling movie tickets, to the street hustlers, to the limo driver. But so what. If this movie showed only white people working in the fortune 500 company, interacting with other white people--with maybe a Mexican sprinkled here and there sweeping floors, or working in the mailroom, and some black street hustlers selling watches (as we already see in just about any other movie), there wouldnt be seen as having anything wrong with that. Its a black romantic comedy, so they made a scenario in which it is realistic that the CEO and board of directors, and scientists and producers and everyone else is black. It doesnt have to be trying to "send a message". Would you only be happy if the main characters and thier friends were working in the mailroom, or maybe had mid-level jobs at BET instead of being president (or CEO or whatever) of a cosmetics firm? Suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the movie. If this entire thing was switched and featured all white characters, you would tell someone they were crazy for complaining that there werent enough black characters in the background.

As for the Martin Lawrence character, just like every other "friend" in a romantic comedy (or most other movies for that matter), he's a "character"--and in this case, the Angry black man, so that is all part of his role. Consider other movies where the best friend is the jerk, or the womanizer, or the nerd, or whatever. This is just another "character" sidekick. And, sorry to break it to you, but racism does exist--so they just incorporated it and made fun of it, without making it a central theme of the movie.

I agree with everything Jim-764 said.

Once again, I must ask you to repeat the magic words over and over:

"It's only a movie...it's only a movie."

Uh oh there he goes again calling black people "blacks". Welcome to the 1950s, people.

this subject couldn't be more ridiculous. The SCREENWRITER who came up with these characters is white, so is the person who PRODUCED the movie and the studio who FUNDED the movie. So if this is a "racist" movie, maybe a better question is, are these people uncle toms? Jeez, what a stupid post. No offense sir, but if you want to take up the plight of the burdened white man in cinema, you might want to try another flick. Rudy Ray Moores "dolemite" comes to mind. White people are portrayed petty tough in that one!

"You rat soup eatin' honky *beep*

I totally agree with you nidi22. That was a really S-T-U-P-I-D post.

reply

some of you are talking such a *beep* First I think there are not many movies whith an all-white cast nowadays. Please do not start and say, in "Casablanca" Sam was supressed or in "Giants" all blacks were waitresses. I mean this was another time and I think we are all happy that this time is over. Of course their ist still too much racism in the world but I can not find much of it in movies. And I think it is rediculous to say there was once racism against Blacks and know it is the turn of the African- American to be racict against the whites! C'mon we still hope men are teachable!

Further you can not complain when a movie is portraying a time where Blacks were supressed.

So please get reasonable and stop searching racism where is no one. We still can find enough racism elsewhere.

reply

You have to be *beep* joking.

reply

Jim,don`t be a cracker.

reply

God you are so *beep* stupid. What about all the movies every made in this world with no black characters. Or TV show. Like Brothers and Sisters, Friends, Frazier, Cheers, Mama's Family, and so on and so on, and you want to call Boomerang racist. SO what were there suppose to do, put a white actor in the movie to give it some credibility. What the *beep* ever!

Black people have the right to be racist .. they were slaves for hundreds of years

I agree

/Life would be boring without music and movies/

reply

I don't agree with that. At all.

Either someone is against racism, or they're not. You can't throw in conditions. For starters, if you use history as an excuse for it, then anybody of Jewish, Polish, Gypsy or a whole bunch of other heritages would somehow be entitled to be unpleasant to Germans all the time. That isn't how it works. Saying that black people are somehow allowed to be racist is like saying a victim of child abuse is allowed to be a rapist when he is older.

Two wrongs don't make a right.
