i think this movie is racist

i'm probably the last person to point out that something is racist but this movie makes it obvious.

these are the only white people in the whole movie:

1. waitress in the beginning, (M. Lawrence said she was racist, made her look like a jackass)
2. salesman at clothing store, (again made him a racist and made him look like a complete *beep*
3. 4 brute guys carrying grace jones in her premier. these guys were chained and treated like reindeer.

those were the only white people in the movie. to me, it seemed the makers of the movie went out of their way to send a message.

loved the movie, hilarious. love eddie, love martin, love david alan grier, but i think this movie is racist.

i think it is very unfortunate that many races have been through racism is recent history, but please, it's a 2way street and we need to kill the whole idea of racism. i know, impossible, but it doesn't mean we can't try.

God bless!!!!!

Well I am sure lots of Blacks feel that way about Woody Allen's films. He rarely uses Blacks in his films and when he does, it's always in a negative context. And I don't hear people complaining about that or the sitcom "Friends" which featured a Black character only for a few episodes. Same thing with "Seinfeld".

Wait a minute, didn't Woody Allen work with Danny Glover in Antz? (a black actor). I mean, I'm on your side, guys, but Woody has worked with black actors in a positive light, he does.

Hey Artman... Seinfeld and Woody Allen aren't white productions. They're jewish. DON'T make the mistake of JEWS being WHITE. They're not.

THIS MOVIE IS THAT FIEEE!!! FOR SO MANY REASONS...
1. THE REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY THE WOMAN PUT ON THE MAN
2. IT'S FUNNY!!! PEOPLE WITH A DEEP SENSE OF HUMOR REALLY GET IT!
3. THE SOUNDTRACK
4. I LIKE THE WHOLE "MARKETING FIRM" IDEA. P.S. I'M A MARKETING MAJOR
5. EDDIE MURPHY'S IN IT
6. HALLE BERRY'S IN IT

reply

oh, this movie is COMPLETELY racist !!! I've always thought that every since I first saw in the theaters !

First of all, there's the fact that EVERY single executive in this movie is black. I'm not saying that there aren't a lot of black executives in this world, because of course there are. However, black people happen to be what is called a "minority" in this country. That means, there are much more white people in this country than black people - and that is reflected accordingly in corporate America.

Then, as jim-764 said at the beginning of this thread, the few white people who actually ARE in this movie are made to look like completely idiotic & narrow-minded jerks !

reply

in my opinion, this movie is not racist, and these are the reasons. it is a black film, so to have an all-black cast does not necessarily denote racism. secondly, the white people that appear in the film appear as part of a sub-plot. the character played by martin lawrence, tyler, is overly aware of racism in a comedic way. he twists everything into a racial issue, and with his obsession with sex, this is his contribution to the movie. if not for tyler, there would be no need for the waitress in the restaurant or the salesman in the department store. by the way, the scene in the pool room where tyler is talking about how the game of pool is racist is quite amusing.

reply

it is a black film, so to have an all-black cast does not necessarily denote racism.

so, since it is a "black film" it is allowed to ONLY have black executives for all of the corporations of the movie ? That wouldn't sound so silly if, as I mentioned in a previous post, black people are a minority in the United States, and because of that there are always at least SOME white people employed in a corporation.

secondly, the white people that appear in the film appear as part of a sub-plot
I understand that Tyler is overly aware of racism & that is just his character. That would be fine, but they actually go out of their way to make all of the white people ACTUALLY racist. They are obviously narrow-minded idiots who are very racist towards black people....and they are the ONLY white people in the whole movie. What kind of message is this movie supposed to be sending with all of that ?

reply

[deleted]

I'm fairly sure that intelligent people (of all races) will find this above post to be completely void of any true meaning & completely lacking in any attempt to actually try and explain the obvious racial aspects of this movies, so I won't bother even complimenting on anything in it.

reply

look if the movie bothers you that much, dont watch it. and if you would have paid closer attention you would have noticed that there were about 5 european men as exectutives. anyways like was stated before, this is a black film, which calls for a black cast. the salesman was openly stereotyping the three men. and since when did all movies have to reflect america? also there are planty of businesses and organizations that do have an executive board which doesnt inlcude a single white person. IT HAPPENS, GET OVER IT. once again, if you got so bothered by the movie DONT WATCH IT! I swear ignorant people make me sick

reply

I don't watch it. I've seen it & that was enough to see that a) it's not a funny movie b) it's a racist movie.

the salesman was openly stereotyping the three men. and since when did all movies have to reflect america?

I don't understand what that sentence is supposed to mean. But as far as the salesman stereotyping the three men, yes I know that. That was part of the reason it has been labelled "racist" (because it typifies the few white people which ARE in this movie as being narrow-minded racist asses who instantly view a group of black men in a very stereotypical way.

reply

Watch the film again - there are white people on the board of directors.

There are plenty of white people in the film and the racial elements are used as part of the gentle satire surrounding Martin Lawrence's character in the film.

reply

"First of all, there's the fact that EVERY single executive in this movie is black."

OHMYGOD!!! Intelligent black people in a major film!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

apparently you've never heard of the following businesses

Ebony-Johnson Publishing (i know people who work here, and yes, all the major executives are african-american)
Essence
Black Enterprise
any black hair care company
Chicago Defender-black owned major newspaper

plus, I believe Eddie said in an interview about this movie that the cosmetic firm, Lady Eloise where they worked was based on Fashion Fair, owned by Johnson Publishing...yes, all black...now get over it and watch some intelligent fair like...Soul Plane

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men.

reply

gee, you're right there's just TONS of companies w/ all black executives...like um...Ebony-Johnson Publishing...and some black hair care companies....and um....all those black-owned major newspapers in the country.

reply

why are you so threatened by this movie? dayum, it's not like its "birth of a nation"...my point isn't that this country is overrun by black-owned businesses, but that just this one portrayal is an example of that world...a world in which you obviously don't know anything about...though that's not your fault...tv/movies still just portray us as background characters to the world at large..we don't necessarily need white people to legitimize our successes...

regarding this entire thread, i just feel that it is quite comical that the mere absence of white lead roles in one marginal comedy movie makes it "racist"...

well, i can't wait for the White Peoples' March on Washington to make sure more white people are working in Hollywood...my caucasoid brothers & sisters, i yield to you to stand up against this great injustice...it's a dayum shame that talented sistahs like jennifer aniston, scarlett johannsen, julia roberts, and angelina jolie are constantly overlooked in hollywood...how many years must brotha tom hanks go without an oscar??? can you remember the last tom cruise movie? we can't stand idlely by why we let an entire year go by before tom can be in another blockbuster where he's playing an intense character of some sort who just might save the world...

I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THIS NUBIAN SISTAH STANDS HAND IN HAND WITH HER WHITE BROTHERS AND SISTERS TO FIGHT THE RACIST BLACK POWER STRUCTURE THAT OWNS AND RUNS HOLLYWOOD!!!

By any means necessary!!!

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men.

reply

Have you never heard of a black-owned company? There are plenty of them. In Atlanta (where I've lived), there is even a "black pages" book similar to the yellow pages for people who want to specifically patronize black businesses - and it's a thick book, let me tell ya.

Do some research before you start typing.

Look how sensitive some white people get when they're not the main character and/or they're not shown as wonderful people in a movie. The white waitress was just a nice person who Martin Lawrence's character MISTAKENLY characterized as being racist. It's pretty obvious that Martin's character was the "slightly militant, racially paranoid guy" so once again, there's something that white people will NEVER get. And the racist white guy in the clothing store is a REALITY, so I'm glad Eddie put it out there.

MyDarkStar is so used to seeing white people around (because you're the majority in AMERICA, not the world sweetie), that he/she's getting angry at the lack of white people. I think Boomerang is a wonderful movie, and perfect as-is. Thank God Eddie Murphy went out on a limb and made a movie that featured successful black people. Why do white people always write these types of movies as "unrealistic?" (remember the criticism of How Stella Got Her Groove Back?) Just because YOU haven't seen a majority-black marketing company doesn't mean they don't exist. I work in one. Maybe you should, too.

I don't remember anyone complaining that there were TOO MANY white people in Eddie's earlier movies - Trading Places, 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop, etc. It didn't seem weird to you that no black people were in Beverly Hills, did it? When there ARE black people who live in Beverly Hills. So why don't you go to that thread and complain about THAT movie being racist, too. Stupid.

Anyone who knows about the Johnson Publishing Fashion Fair cosmetics line or even the Ultra Sheen hair care line would know where that's coming from -- both originated as black owned companies and captured a market share for an untapped niche at the time

Were the products which the companies were selling in this movie specifically marketed towards black people - like the companies you just named ?

reply

@Mydarkstar

You're an idiot---this was a film about black people MADE by black people focusing on THEM for a change. So what if black people are a minority in this country? That sure as hell dosen't mean we can't make a film that focuses just on US for once. And when you look at the fact that 88% of the films that come out of Hollywood are always about white people, you need to get out of here with that BS. The interactions with the white people in this films are things that black people have to deal with in real life in certain places. Ain't a damn thing racist about it. You're just not used to seeing a film where white people aren't front and center for once, and that's what's really bothering you. Get over it and get over yourself. And there's nothing that says white people have to be perfect all the time in a movie anyway.

Granted, your poat was nearly a decade ago, but so what---I'm tired of seeing stupid s*** like this said on IMDB all the time. I guess you're throwing a fit because a black film (Ride Along) is currently the number one film at the box office. OH,well, that's YOUR problem.

reply

get the hell out of here there can not be a film with a black cast so u think it racist crazy. lets think all the moviesthat would ever made name how many black Ocars. let think gone with the wind that film has a white cast and i hate see older movies where they have African-American slaves or housekeeper. I am white and I do not think this movie is racist. I think this movie is funny and top-notch. Eddie and the boys are hysterical. Robin and Halle are absolutely gorgeous. The soundtrack is to die for (especially P.M. Dawn's "I'd Die Without You.") I thought the way the idiot salesman was portrayed was actually funny - the guy was a dick and deserved getting yelled at; I love how he levitated.

The Board of Directors for Lady Eloise cosmetics were white, and were not potrayed in a negative light.

reply

I don't think it's racist. But I understand what you mean. A "black" movie where the few white characters are depicted in a negative way.
Quite frankly, it is peanuts compared with The Cosby Show.

reply

WTF are you talking about?? are you saying the cosby show was racist?

reply

You might read my post again before jumping to wrong conclusions...
I´m not saying it is racist. I´m saying that it is a "black" film (series) where the few white people appering on it are depicted negatively. Got it now ?

reply

the movie was clearly intended to show the reverse of things ... African Americans dominating society, women dominant over men in the corporate ladder and male "players" getting a share of their own treatment ... in other words, it's a satire ... whether people find it funny or not is beside the issue ... the point is that it is not racist in itself ...

OK, here is the break down on the whole movie and why white people were scarce throughout it. It it that way in this film because it is told from a black perspective. The late eighties and early nineties were a sort of second renaissance for Black people. Movies were being made music genres were being bent, and Boomerang was made. It depicted blck people in a way not previously seen and a way that scarcely existed in 90's corporate America.

Now, what the hell are these negative depictions of white people that you all are talking about. Do you not understand theword stereotype, because if I am not mistaken, the few whites in this movie were not stereotypes, they were simply not important characters to the story. Take for instance, the waitress at the beginning of the film when MArcus and his friends are having lunch. I found her to be pleasant and a person comfortable in her role as a waitress. Whoever says that she is a negative depiction totally missed the point of the scene. She was there to bring home to the viewer the point that Tyler was crazy in his who way of interpreting what people say and do; i.e., he is the classic conpriacy brother. His friends however pointed out that she wasn't being racist when she said asparagus spears instead of tips, but simply and competent and enthusiastic waitress. The man in the Boutique, he was on the opposite end of the spectrum from the waitress. And YES! there are people even in the 21 century who react to black people in just that way. Why was he negative, because he is apart of the black perspective of things. That is how we are somehow treated, and the way thet portrayed it in the movie was satircally brilliant and over the top.

The only reason this movie and movies like it are made because until very recently, blacks didn't get the leading romantic roles. Movies like hitch, LAst Holiday, and Something New were are dream for black actors to attain. We didn't get the opportunities, so we made our own.

The critics may have not liked this movie, but Paramont got there loan paid in full and then some. It is still making them money today.

reply

It's a bloody movie....a movie...one more time...MOVIE. The End.

reply

C'mon folks, you can't be serious. 99% of the movies made in Hollywood have predominately white casts. While some actually are racist, most just depict worlds in which white people dominate.

Most movies and television shows have stereotypical, stock black characters - the noble savage, the black sidekick, the buffoon, the loyal servant, etc. This has been going on since the beginning of American cinema.

Although it is guilty of creating a Black corporate fantasy world, Boomerang is one of the few movies in which Black people are shown to be capable of love, humor, intelligence and the full range of emotions. To the extent that Black people are actually in power and control their own destinies is probably something that threatens the people who consider it racist.

I live in a Black neighborhood and have for years worked for organizations that employ mostly people of color and serve people of color. I guess if there was a documentary made of my life you'd call that racist too. Just because you've never been a world populated by Black people running things doesn't mean these worlds don't exist.

reply

You have made some interesting points Jim, and if I were white, I may possibly come up with the same conclusion. However, this is the world "we" as African-Americans live in. The waitress in the restaurant and the man in the clothing store, happens to everybody that is black in America. It just does.

As far as the men with Grace Jones, I am not sure if you know this, but she actually does have real live male slaves and have had them for a number of years, and if I am not mistaken, they are white, and she lives over in Europe.

The interesting thing is that all of the things that you point out is straight up REALITY and that is the sad part. For most Blacks, they don't have cute little stories or anectdotes in regards to their interaction with whites in our society. Thus, in a film such as this, a depiction of "our reality" is just hard for us to look at as racist, when we walk out of the theater and deal with it, and then, it's not a movie!

Point taken Jim, however, unfortunately, that's is truly the Real World!
