The music theme has become popular now thanks to Glee, and I think a show like this would have been a hit now unlike back then.

hmm that I am not sure about. Maybe bc of online music streaming. and ability to get music out more. But the type of music it was promoting had a specific genere/specific band. It was not like a talent show where people come and sing. THe show was for one band only and to promote them.
shareWhen this show first came out it was at the start of the grunge movement, guitars, flannel shirts a DIY ethos. The music in the show was just too mainstream and I think they screwed up on that as they lost their audience. It may have suited the 2000's better as that is when you had all the acoustic singers as well as "punk" bands that weren't punk, just mainstream rock.
