Why is the assassinated chancellor's daughter named the new chancellor?


Don't they have elections or at least a battle for power as shown in TNG? Chancellor is not a hereditary system--that's the emperor.

Good question, the word chancellor implies state or legal official which in turn implies a democratic process, maybe it’s a semantic related issue in that chancellor is as close to describing the position within the English language but it is not encompassing of it either?
