Maybe, of it's time. There's always people like this and this is just the "hipsters" of Austin at the time, though less self absorbed perhaps.

Swing Kids, Beatniks, Hippies, Punks, Slackers, Hipsters...
There's always going to be twenty-year olds. I don't know why people keep being so surprised.

reply

This is five years coming, but I love this statement.

👍

As a 90's kid, knowing beatniks and hippies, myself being a punk kid, and more than my fair share of slackers... Hipsters are nothing like the rest. Hipsters are the most apathetic, self-absorbed people that have ever graced this fair planet. If you have real conversations with real hipsters, they are apathetic to the point where they make you want to just kill yourself. All outlandish descriptions aside, hipsters *beep* suck.

reply

Are they? I see a fair amount of hipsters in the academia, and they often appear quite capable and motivated. They read complex books, watch decent films, implement interesting business projects, attend free lectures, are relatively immune to mass media, and so on. Pretty much the only problem is that they are the real-life equivalent of SJWs, but even that depends on the context.

What sort of real conversations do you mean?

reply

As someone who was 20, living in Austin, and hung out around the UT campus when this movie came out, I just see it as a documentary of my life and my friends. :-)

reply

I lived in Chapel Hill, NC during the time this movie was made. I agree ... it's like a documentary of early 90's college town life.

reply

It definitely reminds me of university town life. It's summer, you've got little money to go on vacation, you're hanging out.

reply

I just see it as a late teens/early 20s college slacker film. I went to college in 2005-2009 and my campus had lots of pseudointellectuals running around and discussing pointless silly yet interesting conversations into the ground all day, ESPECIALLY hanging around the theater department. God I miss college.... and its only been 2 years

Wow, you really brought me back with the "pseudointellectuals running around and discussing pointless silly yet interesting conversations into the ground all day". Hell I was in college from 91 to 2001 more or less, and those conversations were some of the best times... those were the days.

reply

I watched this movie and realized "Nothing has changed with these hipster kids... Hell, they even dress the same"

The end of the world doesn't seem so bad now that you're here.

reply

People are so paranoid of being hipsters, they'll go out of their way not to like something just because it is deemed. It's stupid, do whatever you wanna do, and if someone else likes it because other people think it's cool, who cares, it's not your damn problem. Life is short and people waste it, some waste it on worrying about getting cancer, or getting raped in prison, and some go out of their way not to buy certain clothes or albums. Stupid. We're all hipsters, and pretty much want to fit in to our own cliques

reply

The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, hipsters, hippies, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore the Slacker, they think the Slacker's a righteous dude.
Truth be told, Austin was always lovingly referred to as "hippie hollow" in neighboring cities. If Hipsters are there, they're just visiting, it's always belonged to the Hippies.

reply

What's a hipster? I keep hearing that term thrown around, but whenever I ask somebody what that means, they always say something stupid, like "Well... it's hard to describe, but like... I know one when I see one..."

All I really know is that they are people who wear sweaters.
