I just got done watchin' the film a few hours ago and David is only in one scene, but it was very interesting.

reply

was he at the beginning middle or end?

reply

Somewhere in the middle I think. I'll have to go back to watch and see.

reply

Im assuming he was the "God" dude?

I missed it while I watched, but I see it in retrospect.

...and the scene was near the beginning. i'd say within the first 20 minutes.

reply

He's about 16 or 17 minutes into the film. His scene is short--he's the "If there is no God...." client.

reply

what is he like? is he his usual sarcastic self or more serious, like the movie is?

reply

He's not sarcastic, rather he just rants about spirituality to Willem Defoe's drug dealer character. It's a dramatic role, but the moment is comedic.

reply

David Spade and a Sam Rockwell sighting!

reply

I love that Spade was billed as "Theologial Cokehead" -- very cool.

reply

Schrader himself screened this film at the Virginia Film Festival a few years ago. In the discussion afterward, he said that David Spade's character was based on himself what he was a coke addict. As you may know, Schrader was brought up in a Christian fundamentalist environment and has long been interested in theological questions. He told us that when he was coked up, he would get obsessed by things like finding proof of God's existence and jabber for hours about the Ontological argument.

reply

In your opinion,which is fine.

reply

Small scene but he was great. It was also cool to see a young Sam Rockwell.

reply

I agree and I got a kick out of his theology, ha. But maybe he was so good since he was experienced at that activity in that scene(he has confirmed in real life most recently on the bill maher netcast). good stuff, he should do more challenging roles!
