Did Bugsy Deserve Best Picture

I think a lot of people forget that Bugsy was a bit of a favourite coming up to the Oscars in 1992. Many people thought it would take home the goods, but it was beaten by the slightly suprising sweep by Silence of the Lambs. Now, I find, that most people would place it last among the 5 movies of that year (Silence, Beauty and the Beast, JFK, and Prince of Tides). Has this film aged badly, or is there some reason it hasn't held up as being considered a classic (especially compared to Silence and Band theB, and then JFK). Is there a reason?

Bugsy is a very good movie, but it is not the same caliber as Silence of the Lambs, which is a favorite of mine. The only OScar Bugsy should have won is for Cinematography. Best Set Design and Best Costumes should have been given to Hook in my opinion.

Oliver's Stones JFK is fantasy fiction and not worthy of any sort of "classic" status. Only the worst of the conspiracy nuts think it is an accurate portrayal of what went on. Both sides of the JFK debate (lone nut Oswald vs.
huge conspiracy) have pretty much distanced themselves from it.

I think some of you are missing the point the thread and of JFK. Whether or not it's actually accurate isn't relevant; it's the story of a man obsessed with the conspiracy and it's a very good movie even if it's not true.

Bugsy was a contender but got mixed reviews so it was not a firm favourite.

Its that man again!!

Bugsy is a pretty awful movie. Below 7 on imdb rankings is usually quasi-unwatchable and the movie fits the bill. I don't know how it was ever considered an oscar contender.

Bugsy shouldn't have won nor been nominated. The right pic won.

The Silence of the Lambs had already won the PGA and DGA awards, both strong precursors for Best Picture.

Additionally, The Silence of the Lambs had key Oscar nominations for acting, directing, film editing, and writing. Bugsy missed a film editing nomination. Films without a film editing nomination rarely end up winning Best Picture.

So, how exactly was Bugsy the favorite?
