Robert Lindsay

Robert Lindsay was absolutely brilliant in this: charismatic and menacing, a corrupt bully whio is also funny as well as sympathetic and vulnerable.
A bit of a shame he's best known for My Family these days.

I saw him on stage in the 80s, in 'Becket', with Derek Jacobi. Absolutely mesmerising - It's a shame it wasn't filmed!

Lindsay's Michael Murray in G.B.H. is truly one of those once-in-a-lifetime type performances, surely one of the great TV roles of it's era. But he was hardly less great in his later collaboration with Alan Bleasdale, the excellent and underrated Jake's Progress.

He's also very good in some of his more recent Stephen Poliakoff stuff.
As for My Family, he is very good in it and it's the performances of some of the cast - not least Lindsay and Kris Marshall (in the early days) that make My Family better than the premise and scripts suggest they ought to be

Just saw this series for the first time and was blown away, I always thought Robert Lindsay was just a decent sitcom actor (only really seen him in My Family) how wrong was I!! He’s an absolute balls to the wall acting genius as Murray, one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

Glad you liked it so much... I haven't seen GBH since the early '90s but still remember so much of the show and Lindsay's brilliant performance vividly. The scene where he searches for condoms during a Doctor Who convention is hilarious, as are his frantic nervous arm twitches.

To be fair, Michael Palin was equally wonderful, his calm dignity balancing Lindsay's unforgettable scene-stealing.

I tried watching it about 10 years ago but it didn’t grab me, my attention span was obviously a lot shorter but glad I saw it on All 4 and decided to give it another go, I agree Palin was equally brilliant as well, I think every character was brilliantly acted.
