Deputy Carlyle: Gentlemen, I am a deputized man, and I do things law way.
Billy the Kid: Which way?
Deputy Carlyle: Law way.
Billy the Kid: Law way, I see. Okay, go ahead, go ahead.
Deputy Carlyle: Now the people out there, they do things their own way. They got their minds set on a hangin'. Now it's gonna be hell if I can't control this situation. So, uh, what I propose is this: I understand you have an Indian in your group?
Billy the Kid: Yes, sir. Jose Chavez y Chavez. He's a Mexican Indian. How'd that be?
Deputy Carlyle: Well that'll be just fine. If I can give this Indian to those people out there they'll be well satisfied. The rest of you can just ride out.
Billy the Kid: You hear that Chavez? Sir, I agree to those terms. They're an angry mob indeed and we do happen to have an Indian on the premises.
That exchange between Deputy Carlyle and Billy the Kid has always cracked me up, and I've quoted the "Yes, sir. Jose Chavez y Chavez. He's a
Mexican Indian. How'd that be?" line many times over the years, because I have a friend who's part Indian and looks like he could be a Mexican Indian (though he denies the Mexican part).
