OLDMAN's BEST...PERIOD

I have seen most of Oldman's films. I think this is his best work. His Hell's Kitchen accent is flawless. I used to live there I know....

I love him as Stansfield too in The Professional....but this was his best role ...

Agree? Disagree?

Well he certainly keeps himself busy there. And covers quite a bit of ground emotionally, too. He very good.

I personally found Gary Oldman to be shockingly distracting in nearly every single scene, and not in a good way.

The character was just really one note the whole way through, and he played it up way too much. The accent was a bit of a bother too.

I'll bite. I found this to be one of his most vulnerable roles. And I think he is fantastic in this, as he has been in many other roles.

He was the only reason to watch this film.

I also agree on both the idea that this and the Professional are his greater works (lest we forget him as Drexel in True Romance- also a fantastic bit on his part, and if you listen to his interview with Terry Gross on NPR there is a great story to his preparation for that role)but John C Reilly is also a great supporting actor always.

Oldman in the 90's was always money, and this film is no exception, but this doesn't touch Bram Stoker's Dracula? That was a performance was epic.

Oldman is a LEGEND!

My favourite actor, no question!

He's a REVELATION in this.

reply

I agree that this is his finest performance ever.

I love his acting right after that sloppy, ground-wrestling fight with the Italians who are hustling Stevie for money in the beginning. He just nails that slightly unsure, "you didn't lose the fight, but you didn't really win it either" vibe.

I find some of Oldman's showier performances to be over-the-top in a very ineffective way (hold your fire!). But in this film, he is perfect in practivally every way (his accent was very good, but not flawless).

Anyway, he deserves the praise he gets for his work here, but I don't think he completely stole the film because Penn was equally compelling in my book.

I haven't seen much from Oldman so I'm not really a big fan of his, but he was great here. Then again, everyone was great in this.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

Oldman is a good actor but can he play a normal person who is serious, how about comedy? That is a true actor as it's obvious everyone plays to his strengths.

reply

Like his performances in many films, Oldman sucks. He hammies it up every chance he gets. That's why he was never nominated for an Oscar before 2000 when it once meant something.
