Salad after the meal

??? that caught me for a loop in this movie... interesting how the wealthy dine... if they all do it like that...

I started a thread topic about that up here awhile back, as it intrigued me too.
Apparently, this is the way its done in swankier restaurants and also some countries!
Its similar to the odd (to me anyway) small scoop of mint ice cream that was served during the meal.
The ice cream was served as a palate cleanser. The salad similarly, it seems. A more relaxing 'eat' after the big main course.

Always makes me laugh when they take away Viviennes ice cream before she's finished, and she tries to fight the waiter for it.

I wish I was wealthy but it doesn't have to do with money. I read an etiquette booklet as a kid and learned things are not done like you are taught. Growing up I was served salad first, sort of as if it was the appetizer.

But learned that appetizers are served first (rather it would be a soup, salad, calamari, etc). But some traditions don't consider a salad or soup as an appetizer and is saved as a pallet refresher (i.e. normally you would consider having after a meal is an expresso or other coffee/tea drink).

It all depends on the area you are in or the company (people) who are serving you. You may have one friend who would do salad, entree, dessert and then visit another friend who would serve you an appetizer (can't recall what Viv had/looked like a sandwich of some sort), entree (snails), salad/or soup, and dessert (Sherbert).

Both my husband and I grew up in families where the salad was served at the end of the meal, and we continue to eat salad at the end of the meal today.

But...why? :O That makes no sense. Salad is a side dish.

Whenever I sit down in front of multiple utensils, I always mentally refer back to my 'Pretty Woman' training on which fork to use first. Fortunately, I dine with cavemen half the time, so the novelty usually wears off before the glasses are even filled.

This was a classic French meal. It's a European style, very big meal, multiple courses, hence all the forks and utensils.

It’s very European.
