Same universe as Sixteen Candles and Dennis the Menace?

The old couple at the airport also appear in Sixteen Candles as Samantha's grandparents and as members of Mr. Wilson's garden club in Dennis the Menace. All the films are by John Hughes, so are they supposed to be the same characters?
