I think some people get the wrong impression that this movie along with the companion movie, My Mother's Castle, are family films. That's a big mistake. They are definitely not family movies. They're intended strictly for grown ups. Children would find the movies extremely boring. I can't imagine any child enjoying these movies. The subtle charm of the movies is over the heads of children. Don't get me wrong. MFG and MMC are my two favorite movies but be warned that they're not good for children.

I can't say I entirely agree. The movie is told from the perspective from a child and is also a bit of a small adventure movie. Still plenty of recognizable things for kids. Maybe not suitable for all children, but I think it's fine for families to watch together. I myself was in my early teens when I saw it.
