Blockbuster yet still no sequel

I personally didn't like this movie that much. But how can a film make so much money and not have a sequel in almost 30 years?

A SEQUEL WOULD BE A DUMPSTER FIRE...WHILE I ENJOY THE ORIGINAL,I THINK WHAT I ENJOY IS THE ERA IT WAS MADE AND ABOUT.NEITHER OF WHICH ARE AVAILABLE IN THE SAME WAY.

Disney anticipated a franchise, but considered the box office performance disappointing and so dropped the plans.

It did decent, just not good enough to warrant a sequel (costing $47 million while making $104 million in the USA and $163 million worldwide).
