40. Letting William Shatner Direct ‘Star Trek: The Final Frontier’

During the original run of Star Trek and the early days of its film franchise, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy had what Hollywood calls a “favored nations clause.” It means that whatever benefit one received, the other would get as well. And so when Nimoy was given the chance to direct Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Shatner insisted that he be allowed to direct the next one. The only problem was that Nimoy was a very gifted director. He proved that again in 1987 when he shot Three Men and a Baby. William Shatner, sadly, had no such talent. Star Trek: The Final Frontier is a mess from beginning to end. The plot, which centers around the Enterprise crew searching for God at the center of the universe, made little sense. The special effects are ugly and cheap. It’s the clear lowpoint of the entire series. Shanter was brilliant as Capt. Kirk. He belonged in the captain’s chair, not the director’s chair.

Not sure if that's fair on Shatner.

Didn't he get put under some strict cut fx budget after the production was already underway?

I have no real issue with Star Trek V - think it's unfairly maligned - but it's major issues are the poor effects at the end and also the thing I always think of - When they come to pick up Kirk, Bones & Spock from Yosemite. That shuttle landing was so badly done! I'm sure they just turned the lights up to 11 so you couldn't see anything and had a side panel of the shuttle for them to be seen going into! Looked really poor...

I wouldn't put much stock in it, the article is full of typos and is being lambasted on twitter
