AAAAAAAAAHHHHH, GET IN THE DAMN HELICOPTER!!!

RANT: I almost ripped my god damn pubes out watching this frustrating film just now. Why did they d*** around so damn much? Right, I understand why he went back for his girlfriend in the first place, but i gotta say even though i love my girlfriend as much as i do, after the third date would I have really went back for her? I dont think think so, but good on Harry he did the right thing, but if he loved the girl so much why did he treat the situation so casually? He wastes so much time on everything he does. He should have lifted his girl right away, ran to the car telling the old folks they could make up later, but instead harry lets them "go ahead" with the car and puts his girl into a shopping cart??? No harry you get in the damn car and drive to the building. Then when they get the pilot and he hears his girl call from around the corner, instead of running right back to the building they decide to investigate a car crash!!! They then stand there and watch two young people die for what seems like an agonizing period of time, then making a lucky escape as the cops take off. Now do they decided to run back to the building and hopefully catch the helicopter? No, harry decides to go use the telephone.... WHAT!!!! He thinks he sees the pilot across the street, then realizes it aint him and decides to watch some TV? After casually watching TV to find out what he already knows, he jumps on top of a van to watch the world turn to *beep* Then some guy for some odd reason freaks out at harry because he damages his car 5 minutes before the end of the world? I have no idea why the pilot came back for these annoying waste of spaces, because frankly neither of them deserved to live. The film was fantastic right up until Harry jumped out of the fan, its just a shame the writer didn't decide to make the cafe owner the main protagonist at that point. I think I'll just stick to post-apocalyptic films from now on. End Rant

100% with you on everything, that crap deserved exactly that rant! I saw this when I was a kid, then just watched it again 5 minutes ago. Not as good as when I was a kid!

Spent the last 2/3 of the movie telling the main idiot (every five minutes) that he deserved to die for being so stupid.

Sure, people are going to make mistakes when they're scared, but not mistakes like watching TV or calling strangers. More like forgetting things, crashing cars and shooting people on accident because they're in a PANIC to get to the BLEEPING CHOPPER!! Thank god for EMP!!

Exactly what I was thinking

I wanted to rip my own hair out (on the top of my headī€¦), looking at Harry and his girlfriend's insane stupidity. Really, most of the stupidity came from his girlfriend with the bad 80s hair. She runs around like an idiot, shrieking at people on the street about knowing how to fly a helicopter specifically after she was told to stay on the rooftop and WAIT. Looking at the movie, it really made me wonder if her actions didn't doom the both of them. Harry wasted precious time searching for her, time he absolutely didn't have. Ugghhh. The end of the world comes, it's best to fly solo.

I think this wasting of time is a major POINT of the whole movie.

It plays out like a dream or a nightmare, we all have dreams like this, where we need to get somewhere but end up doing a whole lot of other stuff, while the clock is ticking.

I understand the frustration as well. However, you have to remember that when they finally reached the roof, the helicopter wasn't even there yet. Even if they arrived sooner, it wouldn't have mattered. I think the main message of the story was that Harry was willing and did sacrifice his life in the midst of imminent nuclear war for the woman he fell in love with.

If I loved someone, I would go back for them but that would be family, maybe a long time lover but 1 date? Nope. But it seems he fell in love at first sight so that's excusable for me. The pilot going back did so for honor because he promised which is admirable actually. But it was a waste of his life for 2 people who did everything in their power to not leave the city. I agree with everything else you said. They were so frustrating both of them, the girl more so.
