What went wrong with The Karate Kid Part 3

The third Karate Kid movie had a tough battle to get through. With an interesting premise of spiriting up the friendship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel. They undermined Daniel, and other characters from the previous films. What could be fixed to help the movie out.

I appreciate the third one for going to a different place with the characters. Sometimes, even in the greatest friendships, we have falling outs and it made sense that Daniel and Miyagi might disagree on the 2nd tournament.

I thought Ralph Macchio was too old for the role of Daniel by the time the 3rd movie came out.
