Did Elsa's death not sit well with anyone else?

It really soured up the movie for me. She, unlike the previous two love interests had a redeeming ark to her story and thought twice on her double cross of Indy. Marion wanted to lie to Indy until he rescued her, and Willie was constantly dissatisfied.

It just seemed a running theme in IJ movies that the chick was the eventually prize/treasure obtained in the end.

I also understand it's due to Spielberg have complete disgust toward Nazis and her death was his "take that you scum!" Gesture towards them.

Your last sentence sums up why. Her complicity with the Nazis made her character unredeemable. And she never really had a chance to show true compassion, which is what redeemed Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List.

Nice observation.
