...was intended as a playful wink and nod to Sean Connery's controversial comments about slapping women.

I'm pretty sure it was meant as an affirmation that Jones Sr's obsession with the holy grail is a bit more than just archeology and his ego.

I took it as more of a way of saying that even though Henry was not a very attentive father, and his son is an adult, he'll still slap him for using the Lord's name in vain.

It's also important for Indy in that he realises that, in a way, he has missed that kind of paternal authority in his life.
