If either characters had say a mobile phone on them and the events took place in 2010s...

... or even, since they were around in late 80s but were expensive and not accessible to everyone, but let's say they had it, would they, Sam Neill and Kidman's characters, be able to prevent all the trouble they experienced in this movie especially near death experiences and other things like drowning or would modern day smartphones or even 80s mobiles make little difference and not be able to entirely prevent all these things happening?
