More artistic movies like this?

I really really enjoyed this film, its utterly stunning, full of symbolisms and shot with great art lust.

Are there any more recommendations ?

If you're searching for similar substance, subject matter, and cinematic technique, check out some of the German new wave films by the likes of Fassbinder or Herzog...

then of course any of the clear inspirations on Greenaway's films such as Kubrick or some earlier Bergman stuff (Through a Glass Darkly, Hour of the Wolf, Persona, Wild Strawberries)

Greenaway is a member of the working filmmakers of The British Film Institute. Try the other member filmmakers such as Terence Davies, Ken Russell and Derek Jarman. They are all quite different and unique. John Maybury's "Love is the Devil" is also another from this group that is quite unique. Greenaway is a painter, and he likes to film large canvas scenes. There are lots of long distant shots in his films. Also, try "The Belly of the Architect."

"A Zed And Two Noughts" is from the same director as this film. It's full of decay like this one is. I didn't enjoy it, but you might find something in it.

Have you tried any films by Pedro Almodóvar? I adore "Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown," and "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!"

Again, a truly fantastic film that transcends. What a shame Hollywood is afraid to make more like this.

the same cinematographer that greenaway worked with in the 80s and 90s also worked with alain resnais in the 60s and 70s. resnais has a film called "last year in marienbad" that you might want to check out.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Bunuel yet...particularly Exterminating Angel, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and That Obscure Object of Desire to name but a few greats.

Un chien andaluz from Bunel is extremely artistic and surreal as L'age d'or. I agree that Bunel is breathtaking for those who like artistic films...

Just a tought, an animation that I found surreal is Waking life from Richard Linklater, it's worth watching...

I would add Fellini Satyricon to the list...

Blue Velvet has a lot in common with this film.
