What are some other movies, especially of that era (1980-2000), that share the "Westerners clashing with Japanese culture" aspect that you can recommend?

I think it's called "Sword of the Ninja" or something. It stars Christopher Lambert. If you can find it will definitely fit your genre of this type of film.
There's another flick with Mark Dacascos called American Samurai, but that's more on the grounds of Bloodsport style tournament movies.
