Why all the hate for this movie?

I frequently see this movie referenced as a terrible 80's fantasy movie. I've often seen in reviews where people write things like "Not since Willow has there been a fantasy film this bad..."

I just read a scathing review for The Last Airbender that included the gem: "The Last Airbender feels like throwback to the pre-Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter era when fantasy was a joke (the bastard son of science fiction) and when movies like Willow dotted the landscape and set unwatchably low expectations for the genre."

I don't get it. At one time I thought it might be one of those movies you love as a kid, but when you watch it as an adult it really doesn't hold up. I've found that to be the case for a lot of movies. This wasn't one of them for me. I bought it on DVD a couple of years ago, and didn't find it to be a masterpiece, but still really enjoyed it.

I tell you what I watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy before this and I still love Willow even after the spectacular direction from Jackson. To me I see it as a fun fantasy adventure that is not trying to be too deep in its mythology like Tolkien and maybe that's why I like it, its Tolkienesque yes but its one of the better ones to be honest.

To compare and hate Willow because it is trying to be a bit like Lord of the Rings is kinda' ungrounded and silly.
Willow is more of a cross between fantasy genre and Indiana jones like adventures.
Sure the special effetcs are not so good anymore, the fighting choreograhpy needs some more work, and there is not so much character development between Madmartigan and Sorsha but all that said the movies are great.

Lord of the Rings is more epic, and besides Tolkien was always bigger in describing events, nature and landscape. And them ovies themselves are more serious, quest like, trying to convey despair and hope.

Willow is more out there, zany, witty and just fun not trying to be heavy or too emotional.

Willow is to Lord of the Rings as The Mummy 1 and 2 are to National Treausre (although I would need a better movie for compariosn, some serious adventure like movie, more serious than Indiana Jones).

The problem is that people expected a lot more from an epic fantasy film produced by George Lucas. It was supposed to be the next big thing after Star Wars; a rival to the well-established Indiana Jones franchise in a fantasy setting.

Instead it was a decent, very bland action film without any memorable lines or characters or events. A cut above stuff like Krull, Beastmaster etc - it was a late entry into the genre - but otherwise flavourless and unmemorable. It's interesting to compare it with The Dark Crystal, which also underperformed at the box office, but had more of an edge. It felt as if the people who made it cared about it. Same with Conan the Barbarian. Conan is high camp, but - dammit - it gives the impression that the people who made it cared about it, and had a vision.

In contrast, the impression I had watching Willow for the first time was that it had been written and produced and directed by a bunch of competent technicians with ample resources but no real vision, no original story to tell. It's blandly generic and unmemorable and was the first thing that came to mind when I heard about the Star Wars prequels.

i thought it was always a pretty good movie. even now i just watched it and it was good entertainment. the special effects were decent enough to not do a facepalm. the like-able dwarf, val kilmer was good, beautiful female role, story was cool..

only problems i had with this movie were the two major wtf's, 1, sorsha and val thing is a little uh ok sure. and 2, i thought it was annoying as hell every time little man tries to change whats her face back into her human form lol..

other than that it leaves me with the entertaining thoughts of:

1- i wonder if when the fat dwarf left with the others in the group to go back to the village, did he tell willows wife he was dead and started banging her, and if so, what kind of awkward confrontation would have taken place at the end lol.

2- if whats her face could change herself into and out of different forms, why would she not make herself young and hot. if so, i wonder how long it would take her to decide how she really wanted to look.

3- when val and sorsha are walking around visiting old places they've been, how many people does he have to kill for trying to get revenge against the evil sorcerers daughter that did so many horrible things, and how often does it work out using the excuse "look please leave us alone, shes turned over a new leaf and wont massacre any more villages"

4- why did the little guys have so much damn pixie love dust and what kind of chicks were they using it on and banging. saw no other "humanoid" females their size the whole movie so what kind of freaky stuff was they really looking for, really.

5- was the same midgets used in the movie the same midgets that played wookies?

6- if willow would have grown some balls and just started using the wand on his enemies more, would it have made his entire journey easier, and after mastering sorcery, would he turn himself into a human sized man?

7- assuming willow changed himself into a 6 foot tall handsome dude using his sorcerer powers, what kinds of fights would he get into with his wife when he asks if he can change her too, and if not would she let him give her a boob job.

8- how ironic would it be for willows wife to have the pride of wanting to remain her natural self and expect her 6 foot handsome husband willow to love her for who she is, BUT at the same time know full well that by staying the way she is willows johnson is gona be like 6 times bigger in comparison to before.

9- would will have already just gave himself a huge johnson? and if so, would it still not be too big for willows wife, something that she would also ironically have to deal with in hidden shame?

man i apologize if u had to read this

It's a good movie. Not a great movie, but a good one. Hence it's 7.1 rating on IMDB. I find that fairly accurate.

People's opinions vary greatly. All in all, the only opinion that matters is yours. What some bum halfway across the country thinks about the movie is irrelevant.

Its one of those movies that actually has alot of heart and soul. These kinds of movies are RARE now adays, when almost everything is a cash-cow of some sort.

Check out the commentaries done by Warwick Davis on the dvd. Excelent work. So informative and funny at the same time. Arguably the best dvd commentaries I have heard.

Where is this hate? Just because it's not called the best movie of all time doesn't make it hated.

Outside of Willow's fan base, the film was generally lambasted by critics for being a Star Wars regurgitation. People tend to not give a damned about the film these days and it is generally forgotten by the masses as well as Lucasfilm. Maybe "hate" is not the best word to use, but the movie never got a lot of love either. None of the past releases have made a splash, but I do hope the nice new special edition Blu-Ray will draw in some new audiences. Willow is an entertaining film that simply got lost in the shadow of Star Wars.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I also think this Fantasy-Movie is great. It has everything and is not boring like "The Hobbit" and partially LOTR was.

It was, thrilling, entertaining, great special effects (for the year 1988/89) - some of them was ground-breaking (like the CGI/Morph-Scenes).

I call this movie one of the greatest fantasy movies of all the time.

LOL you're so right about Last Airbender or Harry Potter.
