Rambo was NOT helping the Taliban

There were many rebel groups fighting against the Russians, and the Taliban didn't exist until 1994.

After the Taliban took Kabul in 1996, the Northern Alliance was formed to resist them. The rebels that Rambo helped would've most likely joined the Alliance.

The name Taliban came to exist in 1996 but it was the same fighters. In the marketing promo for this movie, it was partly dedicated to Bin Laden who was an ally at the time

reply

I would like to see proof of that.

Don’t take milsey seriously, he admitted to me on the A View To A Kill board he was trolling. But from what I understand Bin Ladden did fight with the Afghan rebels and many of them did later form the Taliban.

reply

You're right, but Bin Laden later formed Al Qaeda. It wasn't until 1998 that Al Qaeda formed an alliance with the Taliban.

Also, 2 days before 9/11, Ahmad Shah Massoud was assassinated by orders of Osama Bin Laden.

reply

Exactly, the Afghan resistance wasn’t who we were at war with for two decades, just some of the members of the Afghan resistance later became members of Al Qaeda and the Taliban which makes films like Rambo III and The Living Daylights a bit awkward nowadays

I don't really follow history but my college professor is a big fan. He told me that Rambo did in fact help what would become the Taliban in this movie. He also told me that Stallone is a republican so it makes perfect sense what he did

reply

What college is this?

reply

What Rambo was helping in this movie was the Mujahideen, a loose coalition of conservative and reactionary forces headed primarily by tribal and religious leaders.

When the Soviet-backed government was overthrown, civil war broke out between former Mujahideen. The Taliban's founders included some of these ex-Mujahideen like Mullah Omar, but to act as if "the Mujahideen" transformed into "the Taliban" is just bad history.

And while Stallone leans Republican, back in the 80s both parties were in favor of assisting the Mujahideen against the Soviet Army. In this sense the second film was actually more "conservative" in its messaging, since the notion that Vietnam was continuing to harbor American POWs, and that American politicians and bureaucrats sabotaged the US war effort in Vietnam, were far more widespread sentiments among Republicans than Democrats.

thanks

sly have simple mindset in 80s that "enemy of my enemy is my friend".

sly go very quiet after 9/11. when first blood 1 & 2 come out on dvd a year after 9/11, stallone do audio commentary and documentary for both film, but did nothing for rambo III. he know that afghanistan habor terrorist who do 9/11 and this film romance them hahahahahaha.

reply

Some of them became Taliban, others formed the Northern Alliance.

reply

yes you are corrects kaimaster but western audience after 9/11 do not see this. they see afghanistan being hub for terrorist who do 9/11. that is all they see! then when they watch this they see afghanistan being glorify. they see afghanistan today as place where female do not have basic right! it is not pleasant country. it is problem place with problem people - that is what western movie fan see.

this film end wth "dedicate to brave mudjihadeen fighter" hahahahh.

there was rumor sly remove this line from end of film for dvd release after 9/11. it is funny being still there! it is cheese.
