If you hate this film.........

you should seriously question the level of your
humanity.....or to put it more bluntly, the lack of it.

shouldn't make assumptions based on other people's taste in movies

Especially since not everyone watches movies for the same reason. One person might look for technical prowess of storytelling, another might look for character development, and another might look for the emotion or heart in the movie.
just because someone didn't like this movie because they thought storyline was slow or the plot was a little flat/cliche or the idea of the film as self-serving... that does not mean they are inhumane.
Heck someone might not like this film SOLELY based on the fact that they don't like reading subtitles!

are they inhumane? nonsense

Hadn't thought of that one!!????
How about the ones who don't like black&white films?
How about the ones who don't like films that take place in chicago?
Or how about people that hate films that involve bowling?

The film was a true masterpiece.I put it in the second :

1.Fight club
2.Cinema Paradiso
3.Wall-E
4.East of Eden
5.A streetcar named Desire

I love you Jimmy Dean

I saw this movie only online and love it.
For one thing, I find well-made movies with non-American setting and culture, most of the times, to be a personal source of wonder. I live in an Asian country that is predominantly Catholic and so I find the scene where the priest rings a small bell in disapproval when there is a kissing scene in a movie being run exclusively for him, highly amusing, mixed with some annoyance at the narrow-mindedness of the clergyman. Shades of how strict our own board of censors is.

And what some others describe as excessive sentimentaliy in the movie, to me, is simply a richness of emotions that is not yet numbed by too much materialistic greediness.

I will not question though the 'level of humanity' of those who don't find it interesting, as a whole, as I do.

Truth inexorably, inscrutably seeks and reveals Itself into the Light.

The level of humanity which is questioned in this thread clearly applies to those
who hate this film , not those who don't find it interesting.

Look. I love this film too. But to express an opinion like this is bound to cause unnecessary antagonism and invoke a great deal of negative response because it sounds judgmental. It's also against the forgiving spirit of the film. Maybe the person who "hates" it or can't relate it it just doesn't believe in love at first sight or unrequited love. This doesn't happen to everyone. If not, the film might seem highly implausible, unrealistic or sentimental. It works for me because I was lucky enough to experience love at first sight and the unrequited side of it too, and it was one of the most painful but beautiful experiences of my life... I wouldn't have missed out on it for the world, and the pain was worth every second of the intense time we had together before she ended up happily married to someone else. The movie brought out these memories and helped me be grateful for my past and heal it. That's why it's a great movie...for me. If I'd said, "I feel sorry for people who have never experienced love at first sight," I would have imagined a great deal of negative response. I'm just glad I know it exists, the same as Tornatore--and he got an amazing movie out of it... The extended love scenes between Toto and Elena as adults are why I like the extended version so much more over the original theatrical release. He filmed it that way originally and it was only because that particular version was too long that it was never released.

Thanks for your input FlorenceFosterJenkins. Just one question?

What if your daughter dated a man (not a forensic scientist or an anthropologist),whose favorite movie was "faces of death".
Would you not be alarmed?....and if so, would you not be guilty of
exactly the same "crime" as you accuse me of?

reply

[deleted]

"The "crime" I accuse you of is writing a stupid post (your OP). The reason that it is stupid is because you went way overboard in putting down everybody and anybody who may have a particular response to this film regardless of their situations."

If you read the title of this thread it very clearly states...if you hate this film....underline the word hate, it's a very specific emotion.
Hating a movie is very different than not liking it.There are countless movies
that I don't like but only a handful that I hate.
I would be in complete agreement with your response if the title of this thread
had been ....if you don't love this film.....but it isn't.
So, all these myriad of people that you seem to believe I have put down, shrink
to a select few.

"I cannot say that I would be “alarmed” if I were to find that my daughter dated a man whose favorite movie was Faces of Death without having more information to go on. "

Now you're simply lying just so you can support your argument, and that is a
very stupid thing to do.

"Even were I to be alarmed, I cannot see how I would then be guilty of going way overboard in putting down lots and lots of people without getting to know more about them. "

Can't have it both ways Florence. Would you be alarmed or not?
If, as I suspect, you were alarmed, the only thing you would be guilty of is,
questioning the humanity of someone who enjoys watching footage of actual
executions and fatal accidents.....that's nothing to feel guilty of, it's
simply common sense.

"In fact, it appears to be exactly the opposite. "

Does it?

I've heard the same argument used to defend The Notebook.

Dead inside!

I thought this was alright but hardly a classic. I just watched the directors cut and it was fierce long for something that doesn't have that much plot to get through. The ending is a bit over the top greek tragedy or something.. it just wasn't quite to my taste. The film feels a bit dated like it was made in the 50's not the 80's. I could have done with a little less of the being in love with classic cinema stuff as well. We got the point there was no need to hammer us over the head with it for almost 3 hours.

Dear Jaytee2000,

It's a good thing that this movie moved you. It's a beautiful movie. I rated it 10, and will be watching it for years to come.
However, please indulge me for a while:
* Questioning other people's humanity based on a medium of art is not only inconvenient, it's unnecessary
* You verbally fighting with other people here to prove your point isn't helping either
* You tend to forget, or unconsciously ignore, the fact that movies are one of the several forms of art. Someone who's a bookwork, or a lover of paintings, may not necessarily appreciate the art form that moving pictures are.
