The Blob (this movie) Vs The Blob (original 1958 film)

Which Blob movie do you like better and why?

Me? I definitely go with The Blob (1988) remake!

I'm with you. This is how you do a remake; make it new, make it better. The original Blob is charming, but it's not without its flaws.

It's great to see a Blob with younger actors (instead of people in their 30s playing high school seniors), and they're actually talented. It's The Blob, they didn't need to be, but they are.

The practical effects are awesome. There are enough subversions of the horror tropes of who lives and who dies and when that you're happy to see where it all goes and rarely know what's coming.

The addition of a villain almost as menacing as the blob itself was very welcome. And Joe Seneca plays it appropriately hammy. "Microbe hunters, young miss!" is such a memorable moment for me, as is his Dr. Moreau-like delivery.

So many iconic moments that stick with you. The chaplain's last scene, Paul's death, the kitchen sink death. I'm really fond of the opening sequence intercutting between the motorcycle stunt and the game; it tells the informed viewer they're in for a treat. I still remember watching the credits for the first time and thinking, "Wait, isn't this the f-cking Blob! It's not supposed to be good!"

While this was a good remake, it did not match the original. Yes, it was a much more modern film, and scarier, but the original is charming in its 1950s monster movie kind of way.

Same here its very graphic and horrying which you would expect from an alien blob that can eat people.

The original. They went more for the action film than the suspense and disbelief thriller of the first.

Of course this one still beats the hell out of the sequel to the original though.

The original was about the true nature of communism/collectivism, the remake was just 80s popcorn

I prefer the original 1958 film. It was more entertaining and more fun.

One of the rare cases where the remake is far superior. Not just better, more modern special effects, but the script is too.
