When the dog attacked Michael

He told Sam that the dog was protecting him.
Obviously meaning that Michael was going to hurt Sam.
So why is Sam not freaked out by that?
I would immediately be asking 20 questions about why my dog needs to protect me from my brother.....and he seems to totally going back to trusting him right after.

At first he didn't. He realized his brother had no reflection (or only part of one) and locked himself in his room freaking and calling his friends.
