Max explained he had a hard time controlling David and the boys. The boys were kinda testing their limits with Max. Remember, Max is like a father figure to them. And as rowdy kids they sometimes taunt their parents. Make no mistake they respected Max and listened to him when he sat his foot down. Like when they came into the video store. Clearly Max told them it was off limits, but when he reminded them in the store, they quickly left. Typically parent/ rowdy teen behavior.

One more thing. It seemed at the time they were trying to terrify Max. But what they were actually doing was trying to irritate them. They all knew Max could easily take them down if he seriously wanted to.

What's said above nails it... BUT... Its also one of the hints to show Max IS a Vampire. That's why its a Bat Kite. Schumacher threw a few different clues in there which make it a "Oh Yeah" moment at the end.

and david was sired by the Widow johnson. the widow johnson was sired by max so he was like david's grand father and the other pack members great grandfather

because they like to troll max.

remember the gang come into max's video store early in film and annoy him? david and gang are like max's rowdy kids and max have trouble control them. that is why max want lucy because she will control them and stop them trolling him if he can turn lucy into vampire.
