Actresses should be reversed

Did anyone else notice how much the actress who played Old Philippa resembled Young Martina while the actress who played Old Martina looked much more like Young Philippa? Given the strong resemblence, I am wondering why the casting directors chose to "reverse" their roles.

I guess I'm the only one that thought they were well matched, to the point that, like another poster, I initially thought they might just have made-up the young actresses. The singer, old and young, had more rounded features, while the other one reminded me of Vanessa Redgrave in both incarnations.

I too believe the younger and older actresses portraying the two sisters are well-matched. Particularly so in the case of the actress who portrays the sister (I can never keep their names straight) courted by the young lieutenant -- to me she bears a striking resemblance to the actress from whom the old general takes his leave at the end of the feast, which is of course the same character.

reply

Same here.

They really did kind of resembled one another.

reply

oh, i'm so glad to see someone else thought so too. my wife and i were so confused. i thought i was going crazy.

i can't believe there are posters here who thought the opposite.

reply

YAY! I wasn't the only one. Man I got so confused from time to time mixing up the two sisters since the young one resembled the sister when she was old and viceversa. I think they should've casted them the other way around.

reply

Yes, I too was confused - but maybe it was the general who got his sisters twisted? And then what, the lovely older woman whose hand he kissed after the feast would have to say, "you must have mistaken me for my sister"? Northern European reticence would've made that most unlikely, to say the least (which is the most any of them said).

reply

No.
