Felt bad for Carlos

I'm wondering what happened to Carlos after he found the building still standing at the end. It would have been nice if he was asked to live in the building by Jessica Tandy's character. Why would they leave that thread untied?

Yeah I agree..I think the director wanted us, as an audience, to feel happy that he ended up "losing". Anyway it's on now, I haven't seen it for ages lets see if I do feel any sympathy for him..I remember being sentimental last time

i think if we hadnt seen him at the building after the hospital scene then we would feel sorry for him that even though he saved Faye he upset her when he came to see her.
But i think when he see's the building standing again, hes happy for them and as a character we've seen his retribution in his saving of Faye and visiting her.
He wasnt a bad guy in the end and as an audience our last impression of him is a positive one.

i felt bad that he brought her flowers and donuts, she got upset, and then he walks away and throws them in the trash...
that part made me feel for the guy
i had pretty much hated him throughout the whole movie-up until we see he actually has a consience and some humanity to save Faye

Yeh Carlos was a punk the whole movie but redeemed himself in the last few scenes with him, especially the hospital visit - he gentlemanly says "Excuse me, Mr Riley? I brought these here for your wife..... an some doughnuts!".

I don't think that he directly upset Mrs Riley, but when Frank went over and said "Look who's here, It's Bobby! He came back!", she remembers that she lost her son years ago and gets upset.

I was happy the way Mr Riley welcomed Carlos at the hospital - seemed to show that he had forgiven Carlos for all he'd done, in light of him rescuing his wife from the fire.

But yeh I always feel for him when he walks away and puts the flowers and doughnuts in the trash.

Great movie.

Since, it was left untied...

There's the chance that Carlos will become friends with them.

I felt bad that he turns a corner in his life, Saves faye, Goes to visit them in hospital to right the wrongs, but since watching this movie from childhood the bit where he's sort of rejected as faye is upset although mr riley embraces him... seeing him walk away and throw them flowers in the trash always saddens me..
that part made me feel for him lots and even though at the end hes back looking at the new building, I still feel for him! its like a little incomplete for me, but i love the movie, it just gets me somtimes, theres a lot of emotional ups and downs throughout it

I did feel bad for him as well . Carlos wasn't an evil guy he was just misdirected in the beginning but he did the right thing in the end by saving Mrs. Riley from the building fire . I thought the same thing too jtpaladin and was so hoping Mr. and Mrs. Riley would have gave him an apartment to live in and maybe even a job working in the restaurant too . I unfortunately don't have this movie on DVD ( yet ) but it would have been great if there was a delete scene just like that for an extra on this movie at least . That would have been so cool and would have tied up the loose ends on this storyline for us fans . IMPO I would have loved a sequel to this movie too ( a year later from the first one of course ) . Where the little fixer ship-type robots would make a return again . It was just wishful thinking on my part years ago of course but too late on that one now lol . Thanks so much jtpaladin for your subject post .

I read the novelization of the book of this film, and I prefer the ending of the book, as Jessica Tandy's character, Faye stops Carlos from leaving, saying it was her fault for thinking he was Bobby and that she would get over it and invites him to stay in one of the empty apartments. And during the credits when the high rise tower is erected, the camera zooms in to the cafe. Faye is serving customers, Frank is cooking and Carlos is waiting tables.

I have sympathy for him, too, because he's a victim of circumstances, being a poor kid with little opportunity who takes the wrong road to earn some dough and finds himself in a losing situation. There's a scene where he's sitting by himself and you sense that there's some emotional torture going on inside him, even though he does commit a vile act afterwards. The ending shows that he's had a spiritual moment, seen the light thanks to the re-building of the structure, and even in his eyes, you can see he's going to be a changed man. I agree too that Tandy's character would have been upset to realize that she's been living in a fool's paradise, now seeing this Hispanic guy is not her son, and even realizing that he's been causing all sorts of problems for them while she was living in a dream world. I too think she would have come around, especially since he obviously lived in the area, and with Cronyn's help, see him as a basically decent guy who needed guidance and some surrogate love since it's obvious that he didn't really get it in his own home wherever that was.

I never knew about that before.

On a separate note, it was sad to read the actor had passed away at 30 years old. :(
