I'm used truly great detectives like Tom Barnaby, Christopher Foyle, et al. I've only seen three and plan to stick with them, but so far am very disappointed.
I totally agree with Observant1, and I'll add on the lighter side:
funny
bit of a snob
grouchy
I enjoy Midsomer Murders sometimes and John Nettles was very good, but I can't begin to compare Barnaby to Morse as a character. Barnaby is just never developed with as much depth. Morse has lots of flaws, but that's a big part of what makes up a human being. I think he's a good contrast to the "superhero detective" type we've gotten used to. This is strictly my opinion, but Midsomer is lightweight next to Morse. Not that I dislike Barnaby. I just wouldn't put them in the same league as characters.
Foyle's War is an interesting one. I haven't watched it in a while, but it was generally a well-written series. As I would expect of an idea and character launched Anthony Horowitz (he wrote the screenplays of many Poirot episodes and also is the author of some novels for teens that I enjoyed when I was that age). Christopher Foyle is a solid guy you can easily get behind and like.
I appreciate that Morse isn't that conventionally likable, but I think that's at least part of why people like him and are compelled by him, funnily enough.
Om Shanti
Yes, you are right about Barnaby. I still stand by my description of Morse, though. I much prefer Lewis. Foyle is my absolute favorite.
shareIt's interesting how divided opinion can be on Morse as a character. Out of curiosity, did you see Morse or the Lewis series first? Sorry if I'm asking you to repeat yourself, but I don't remember offhand if you've clarified this on other posts. Over on the Lewis board, we established that some people who'd seen Lewis first were the same people who had a harder time warming to Morse. Conversely, the fact that I started watching Lewis because I was devoted viewer, and sometimes reader, of Morse makes my position fairly clear.
Om Shanti
I may have seen one Morse first and did not continue. I had seen almost all of the Lewises, then tried to go back to Morse and just couldn't get interested.
