Wow that article gets a 10/10 for superb mental gymnastics. The labyrinth, the Goblin King, all the puppets are created in Sarah’s imagination. He is her creation, maybe even modeled after a pop star she liked (which honestly makes the casting brilliant).
That’s why he voices his frustration about how everything he did was all for her: taking away the burden of her baby brother, bringing her to a magical fairytale world and making her the center of that world. Because that’s what SHE thought she wanted. It’s very reminiscent of Wendy in Peter Pan realizing the importance of growing up.
I think people just take issue because of the age difference and Bowie’s prominent package. If they had say a Timothee Chalamet or Tom Holland type who looks very young, paired with an actress in her late teens, it would seem less strange.
But the strength of the movie was in the performances of both Bowie and Connelly. A change in casting might have ruined the film.

I always thought it was an allegory for bad sportsmanship.
