Wow that article gets a 10/10 for superb mental gymnastics. The labyrinth, the Goblin King, all the puppets are created in Sarah’s imagination. He is her creation, maybe even modeled after a pop star she liked (which honestly makes the casting brilliant). That’s why he voices his frustration about how everything he did was all for her: taking away the burden of her baby brother, bringing her to a magical fairytale world and making her the center of that world. Because that’s what SHE thought she wanted. It’s very reminiscent of Wendy in Peter Pan realizing the importance of growing up. I think people just take issue because of the age difference and Bowie’s prominent package. If they had say a Timothee Chalamet or Tom Holland type who looks very young, paired with an actress in her late teens, it would seem less strange. But the strength of the movie was in the performances of both Bowie and Connelly. A change in casting might have ruined the film. I was 8 years old when TLM was in theaters. I went to see it, had the VHS, watched it a thousand times, and know all the songs by heart. The only reason I was ever interested in seeing this live action remake was purely for nostalgia. I’m not angry about the casting choice but I won’t bother watching it. It’s now no longer a remake but a reimagining which won’t evoke the same feelings for me. Also, I’m actually more disappointed in the casting of Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. It’s a missed opportunity to have a drag queen play the part when the character was originally based on Divine. I see what you’re saying and about the whole hwite male stereotype. But I still stand by the fact that SF being a nazi had nothing to do with why she appealed to Homelander. It was her combination of domineering mother figure and her putting him up on a godlike pedestal that he enjoyed. He wasn’t upset that she died, he was mad that she would no longer be there to literally stroke him/his ego. But in the same few episodes they had A-train’s family call him out on his ridiculous “getting back to his roots” gimmick. As well as Annie’s whole “no one even bats an eye when a man climbs the ladder” justification for becoming co-captain, completely blowing up in her face when she realizes she was never gonna be able to outplay Homelander. And not to mention Victoria Newman being based on AOC actually being the evil head popper. I feel like the script will tell us things that go along with the current woke narrative. But then through the actions of the character it shows us the ugly truth about how people really are and identity politics doesn’t shield any group from the reality of human nature. It certainly isn’t completely woke free but it does kinda poke fun at everything. However, I’m gonna have to completely disagree with you on Homelander being a Nazi/white supremacist. He absolutely does not think whites are superior, he just thinks he as an individual is superior, to everyone. He doesn’t even believe supes are superior, just him. His relationship with Stormfront and Elizabeth Shue’s character just feed into that narcissism. I even recall him being uncomfortable when Stormfront was talking about some of her master race shit in front of his son. He is a world class psychopath, but he treats all types of people with equal disregard. I don’t think your comments came across as hate posting. Btw I love “Stand by Me” and am a big SK fan, I don’t know how I didn’t notice its influence on ST. You’re right about the bullies in his novels but in some cases, such as in “It”, they are influenced by malevolent forces. The basketball guy (name I can’t remember and too lazy to look up) I can almost buy. He’s clearly upset about his girlfriend and saw some messed up shit. It’s him convincing the whole town that I had some trouble with. I forgot what an awesome left turn they made with Steve’s character in season 1. I remember when he showed up at the Byers house (?), I thought “well he’s getting killed by the demigorgon” and was so surprised when he not only didn’t die but was given a redemption arc! What a great season that was. Yes, that is how I would describe Will. Realistically, there are probably more asexuals then all the other alphabet people. By making him gay, it just reinforces the trope that all sensitive, artistic boys must be gay. It’s why many boys can have a hard time expressing platonic love in their friendships with each other. I like Will and Mike as a nice bromance, I hope they get to stay that way. I completely understand what you mean about it not feeling grounded in reality anymore. One quirky character is fine but they have gone completely overboard. Murray, Yuri, Robin, stoner guy, Dustin’s girlfriend (and her entire weirdo family), Lucas’s sister, and probably some more I’m forgetting. You could cut all of them out and it would vastly improve the tone and not effect the plot much. I do like the D&D kid (I’m sorry I’m so bad with names). I had friends back in the day that he totally reminds me of. Also, starting last season they’ve been way too heavy handed with the 80s shit. It’s becoming a parody and no longer feels authentic. But the silliest thing has been the bullies. I’m sorry but you would never get an entire roller rink full of people to all cheer and laugh as a girl gets taunted and assaulted (throwing a drink on someone is assault). But even if people were that cruel, they would have been equally as amused by a girl getting clocked in the face with a roller skate. The bullying could have been toned down in the present day and flashbacks and still had similar impact. Bullying doesn’t have to be sadistic or overly violent to be emotionally scarring to a kid. However, with all that said I am enjoying this season. It could have been a perfect season if they dropped some of the bloated cast and edited a lot of the goofy dialogue out. The story is great, the villain is the most fleshed out we’ve had in the series, and the way things tied together was well done. Depending on how it ends it can potentially surpass season 1 as my favorite. I was thinking “Bring Out Your Dead” guy aka “Monster Shouter” as well. I couldn’t see him being cast in a roll any bigger. Has it been confirmed or just rumored that he is part of the cast? Seems odd they wouldn’t announce his role if it’s a main character. I think what you’re forgetting is Spider-Man was brought into the MCU as a motivating force for Tony Stark. He was a defeated man after Infinity War and had much more to lose than gain. It was knowing that if there was even the slightest chance he could bring Peter back, he owed it to him to try. That’s the part you might be missing. It’s not about what Iron Man has done for Spider-Man, but what Peter did for Tony. None of these MCU characters were meant to be self contained heroes. The individual movies set up the bigger picture of “The Avengers”. It worked so well because at the end of the Infinity Saga we cared so much for so many characters, and they cared about each other. Going forward I expect they will use the remaining heroes to build up to another epic battle that the heroes and us as the audience will be equally invested in. I can see why that might not be your cup of tea, but it’s the Spider-Man we have for now, at least until the next reboot! ;) I don't understand what the writers were thinking with this. The characters have no chemistry. The biggest problem is there was no build up. They spent so much time on the Rick-"What's her name" romance. Then her and her kid die and the next day he's in bed with Michonne. It has completely destroyed her as a character, and she was one of my faves. View all replies >
