I need help explaining part of the story

I'm a bit confused by what happened to the village and his family.

Why did him finding a gun on the beach lead to his family being murdered?

Did he do something to cause this or was it just a coincidence and the Germans would have done that anyway?

Because they were buried by partisans fighting the Germans, so the Germans punished the village.
