(Stay Spoiler Free) Is Hokuto No Ken 2 worth it?

This is my first time going though the series and it's a classic anime and I'll be done tomorrow. But, and stay spoiler free, should I continue with on to HnK2 or watch the Shin HnK OVAs? Only because it doesn't seem as good as HnK and it seems like Toei animation pulling a DragonBall GT before DragonBall GT.

And if HnK2 is worth it is Shin HnK after or before HnK 2 or even before HnK? And is there anything else that's animated that has to do with HnK that's worth it?

reply

Its been a few weeks since you posted this so maybe you've already went ahead with HnK2, personally I like it while it doesn't compare story wise to the original its still fun. The first part isn't that great but the second gets pretty wild if you're a fan of Hokuto just stick with it. The OVA story is a stand alone and you don't need to watch any of the old shows to understand them, they aren't terrible if anything they're a nice face lift to an old series and add a little more to the history of the hokuto fighting style. Hope this response isn't to late.

This is about six months late but I thought that Shin HNK blew the big one! I am a DIEHARD fan of all things Hokuto so my opinion might be biased. I just finshed watching Raoh Gaiden 1 and 2 and Yuria Den. Now those are AWESOME. I highly suggest them if you liked the series.

reply

I prefer to think that Shin HNK doesn't exist. You'd think Bat and Rin's Hokuto Army would've advanced to that area and taken out the tin-pot dictator themselves. And Kenshiro was seriously powered down. What, he can't break through some bars now?

reply

Yes. It would have been easy for Kenshiro to summon the spirit of a Nanto Seiken fighter and just cut the bars.

that was the great thinka lso about hnk2 that consatnt build up of his powers, i eman the guy gets trashed every here now and then but comes back and delviers serious butt kicking, i loved how he learned the toki techinque that was intense, i like hnk 2 i ahve to watch it again..

reply

I just finished watching HNK on hulu.com. I thought there were 156 episodes but I guess HNK 1 ends around 108 or so.

That ending was good enough for me :)

Everybody likes the Shen.

HNK is the first part the rest of the eps is called HNK2 hope that helps.

HnK2 finishes to ep152. You should definitely watch them. Totally worth it.

reply

In my opinion no, it's not worth it. There are numerous (and stupid) retcons and it's basically a much weaker rehash of the first series, including the main villain.

reply

I didn't like it at all but I wouldn't say it's not worth checking out just for curiosity.

reply

Not worth the investment of time, IMO. Maybe just read a synopsis on Wikipedia.

reply

Totally worth it.
It's almost as cool as the first one.
Cannot be missed if you liked it so far.

Not to mention, it's still cooler than 99% of the crap produced since.

reply

Nah. Story drags on interminably. Ken is comparatively weak. Villains are boring. Animation quality varies but is not as good as the first. It felt to me like the creators just mailed it in.

reply

What???
How is the story dragging?
If anything, considering how powerfull each bad guy is, it's too fast paced.
Ken is weak compared to the first series, exactly because lots of the baddies are seriously powerfull this time. He has to raise his game, just think about the welcome he gets on the island.
That makes it so interesting.

The animation and graphics are vastly improved over the first series.
Nothing feels mailed in. I wish it was a longer series to give more weight to some plot points/fights, it's too fast and frantic while I would prefer more epic.
