Did anybody else find William Hurt

irritating in this role? There was something about him/his character that was incredibly off putting and uncharismatic. This was not one of his better performances, almost as though he just phoned it in.

On the other hand, Piper Laurie was the best bit of this film. Her short scenes were the most moving and honest bits of this overrated, dated and flimsy take on a sensitive subject.

I fell in love with William Hurt when I saw this film! He seemed just right for the role because he looks like he could be a teacher but he also makes a great romantic leading man. He had a lot to do in his performance, particularly having to vocally reiterate everything that Marlee Matlin was signing to him. I can understand that might grate against some people but it was necessary for the film to appeal to a mainstream audience. Considering the sheer energy of signing and talking his way through the entire film, I don't think it can be said he phoned it in. He was expressive, emotionally engaging, and I found him extremely charismatic. Maybe it's just down to personal taste.

Piper Laurie was great in the film too, but she only had a couple of scenes which leaves less to be critical of. The film's true star was Matlin though.

I came here just to write what an absolutely stunning performance he did. Every time I watch this he sticks in my mind for weeks after, and not just because he's also hot as hell in this;)

Rewatched this recently and have to say Hurt was excellent and IMO deserved his Oscar Nom. I think sometimes because of Matlin's superb performance he sometimes fails to get the recognition he should.

I really like him, always and especially in this movie.
Didn't know Matlin won the Oscar for Best Actress, but I found his performance was so good he should have gotten an Oscar too.
Both he and Matlin were so good looking.

I thought he was brilliant. I don’t think you could find a more natural leading man during that period. He was sublime.

In The mid 80s W Hurt was my favorite actor. Big chill, Spider Man, Accidental Tourist, Broadcast News and early 90s The Doctor. Was there any actor who had so many great performances? And in this movie he plays 2 roles repeating her signing, plus their chemistry! I think they dated after the movie.

Kiss of the Spider Woman

The guy had to sign all through the movie and you think he PHONED IT IN?!

reply

I actually kind of got the arrogant aspect of his personality...but thought it reflected excellent acting. IMHO, that was part of who he was. He came there thinking to change the world...the world of deaf students to match his perception of what "should be." So what you found off-putting I found intriguing.

I also like Piper Laurie because I thought it WAS honest. But I thought Hurt's role was honest as well.

I finally saw the movie.
I thought Hurt was great in his role.
as was Matlin.

great little movie.

it really holds it age well.

reply

Yes, I did. I also thought he was phoning it in. The way he delivered most of his lines while speaking with Marlee was incredibly stilted.

Of course, I didn't really mind very much, because, well, you know, Marlee. I could watch her floss her teeth and be happy.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

No. It was the performance of a lifetime.

IMO you'd have to be a real A-hole to find Hurt irritating in this movie. I'd venture a guess you're a relatively irritating person yourself.
