The scene in the field when she runs to him and they embrace and start passionately kissing and he starts working on her neck, that just doesnt stop cold. The launch sequence was fully initiated. They did it. But Peter Weir did a great edit there.

I agree, but I wonder about the editing choice.
If Witness was otherwise just a bit suggestive and nothing more about John and Rachel's mutual attraction, the edit would make more sense to me, but since they showed Rachel full frontal for several seconds with John starting at her girl parts, they could have added a few more seconds to that scene in the field.
Without getting too graphic, they could have shown the same kissing scene up close, cut to a long shot still kissing, then have them slowly drop towards the ground - cut the scene before they even get there.
I don't get the reason for the small ambiguity there.
