One f-bomb in the entire movie

For an R-rated action movie, that's unheard of. The context of its usage is pretty tame as well (ie it's not 'motherf-ker' or anything). There's also only one or two uses of $hit and a few bastards and son of a bitches, as well. Not even an a$$hole. Really tame stuff.

It wasn't until Die Hard came along when everyone in action movies started to have a potty mouth and swear in every scene - that movie set the standard and from then on it was all f-bombs and trash talk.

Action movies made before Die Hard like Rambo II were quite refined and mature in that respect.

Ever see Scarface?

Yeah it's got f-words in every scene, but it's not an action movie.

OK fair enough, I myself consider it a crime drama but I know some who call it action. Having said that let's go at this from another angle have you ever seen Robocop? Quite a lot of F-bombs in that movie also. Or Aliens? or Lethal Weapon? or Predator? All came out before Die Hard.

I don't like swearing for the sake of swearing (example, a Michael Bayism in the Rock: "what kind of f-cked up tour is this?", yeah I'm sure a regular person in a hostage situation would react that way). But if the acting is good I don't mind it at all (example Reservoir Dogs, Goodfellas).

Same here. You can always tell when they're just trying to sound edgy and cool, like in The Rock (which is the most forced swearing movie out there). Profanity sometimes becomes a substitute for good writing.

Swearing can add authenticity to movies such as those. One of my favorite swearing movies is Tropic Thunder - they swear all the time but it feels funny and not that abrasive.

I don't read the script, script reads me

Haven't seen Tropic Thunder but I remember the profanity in Clerks was absolutely hilarious. Yeah pretty much everything Michael Bay attempts goes wrong, he is such a joke, he makes movies for middle schoolers. Another example is that black woman saying something like "why the f-ck don't you have a gun, I have a gun, let me out of here and I'll go get my motherf-ckin gun", seriously shut up there is no way any normal person would say that in that situation.

Gotta say though the one F-bomb in this movie works really well, Steven Berkoff gives this big, long arrogant speech and expects Rambo to comply and all Rambo has to do is say something as simple as "f-ck you" and he made Berkoff his bitch.

He does. People & critics really hated on Rambo II when it came out, saying it was mindless violent trash. Just take one look at a Michael Bay movie and you'll see a film devoid of any soul or semblance of humanity. At least Rambo had charm, character and meaning - treasured art compared to anything that hack has crapped out.

Haha, exactly! Similar thing in Rambo III when the bad guys are going on for ages telling him to surrender and that they won't hurt him, and Trautman asks "what do you say, John?" and he replies (while loading his grenade launcher) "F-k em!".

The movie 'The Ref' starring Denis Leary is another great swearing movie - tons of it, but it enhances the movie and doesn't feel gratuitous because it's funny and is delivered so well.

Yeah Rambo II was definitely not mindless trash. It was an action movie, it was really over the top but it had a point to it and it at least paid tribute to the POWs. What is really sad is The Rock is probably Bay's second best movie (I actually did like the Benghazi movie despite still containing numerous Michael Bayisms).

LOL yeah I remember the F-bomb in Rambo III, it was awesome the first time I heard it but ever since then Rambo III has become my least favorite Rambo film and I actually sometimes pretend it doesn't exist, I view First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo (2008) as a trilogy and it does kind of make sense if you ignore Rambo III. To me Rambo III works as a standard action film but as a Rambo film feels kind of out of place, would have worked a lot better as a Commando sequel, I could totally see Matrix going into Afghanistan to rescue General Kirby, that would have been awesome.

Can't believe I haven't mentioned this, Pulp Fiction pulls off excessive profanity probably the best out of any film I have ever seen.

Because they don't use a word?
What is it with americans and them pissing their pants and crying like babies because of the word *beep*?
All it does it makes american more pathetic than they already are that they think that word is the worst thing ever invented and everybody has to be kept save from it...

reply

Because they don't use a word?

No, because Rambo II used one f-k as opposed to 50 f-ks. It makes a big difference. Gratuity in any context is always detrimental to a film.

On the Audio Commentary, Cosmatos mentions how they discussed at length whether or not Sly should drop the f-bomb in that moment. Eventually they decided to do it but it was debated to a lengthy extent.

To any BluRay/DVD distribution company: please release No Retreat No Surrender sequels on BluRay!

reply

Interesting, thanks. I'd call that a pretty effective use of the f-bomb, not gratuitous, just funny and relevant to the scene. Most films should take note of that ie only swear when necessary.

It's not Rambo II. There is no 'Rambo II'.

The movies are:

First Blood
Rambo: First Blood Part II
Rambo III
Rambo

So take your pick, but don't lie about any 'Rambo II'.

reply

But Rambo First Blood Part 2 is the 2nd Rambo movie. So it shouldn't offend you people shorten the title to just Rambo 2.

What I want to know is how this gets an R rating but Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom get PG? Both Rambo and Indy kill an insane number of people and both are equally bloody. BTW I don’t think either deserve an R rating both are PG material (although First Blood and Rambo 2008 both do earn an R rating, First Blood mostly for the language)
