Diana's parents meeting

Awkward!

reply

I think it would have been neat if Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd made a cameo as her parents rather than those boring, snobbish WASP's! Diane Ladd is full of charm and spunk and her character would have probably accepted Rocky right away!

reply

She would have been fired if she had accepted Rocky right away. That wasn't the way the movie wanted them portrayed.

The parents were very wealthy and overprotective of Diana. They would have disapproved of Rocky even if he didn't have the deformity of his skull. They would have seen a "white trash" kid with really long hair and raggedy clothes, and they would have kept Diana from having any communication with Rocky.

reply

Good point there. I don't think they were extremely wealthy, as they were driving a Buick station wagon as opposed to a Cadillac or Mercedes. But yes, they were totally middle class at the least and rather snobby in their demeanor.

I like the way this movie never passes judgement on Rocky's family and looks at all their characters as caring and three-dimensional.

reply

I agree with other posters, Diana's parents came off as overprotective and snobbish and wouldn't have been ok with Rocky if he didn't have a facial deformity.

reply

Awkward!

It is. So much so that I usually don’t watch it. I usually don’t watch it when he meets Diana’s friend either.

reply

Very awkward! If my beautiful daughter came up and said here is my new redneck retarded bf I would be all hell to tha no. I felt bad for diana being lied to by rocky. Rocky treated everyone he knew like crap. He lied and talked down to ben who was a great friend. Oh you are so stupid ben how could you go and get a terrific job and forget about our gay trip together. It makes me sick how he only cares about himself. He attacked a kid at school for gods sake. He should have died a year or 2 before he did.

reply

Yeah, but overall Rocky had a great personality he was a nice person. Though it was totally wrong to diss his bff like that I guess it was just the amount of stress he was going through. I mean who is going to go around happy go lucky 100 percent of the time normal people can't do that, so why should you expect a teenager who has been called a freak his whole life and by the way as killer migraines...if I were i'd be an a-hole too.

reply

Diana is blind and the blind community is similar to the deaf community, they don't like normal people and outsiders coming into their world, Diana was sweet but not able to stand on her own which is hard when U R blind, it really is.

Uh baby U 4got to pull out. 9 months later, can U pull this "bleep" baby outta me, do that @ least!

reply

Why are you hating on Rocky so much? Jeez. Loser.

reply

You need to remember that even though Rocky was very mature, and was parentalized at a very young age (given his disfigurement, and the way he has to take care of his mother almost as much as she takes care of him), he is still just a kid. It's not unusual that he will sometimes revert to immaturity or brattiness - just like a kid would do.

Good post, zziiyy. I agree.
Rocky may be well-adjusted & surprisingly mature for his age, but he's still a young teenager.
And I didn't blame him for getting angry at Ben. He took it too far yes, but Ben just up & crushed a dream that BOTH of them had planned for a long time.
Rocky also was systematically losing everything in his life, including his very life, and he knew it. I'd lose it too.

The way he and Gar say goodnight to each other at the end is especially heartbreaking... since it feels more like a goodbye.

Troll. Rocky was a wonderful person who had the right to get upset sometimes just like anyone else. Geez most people would've never even left the house and probably done themselves in if they were in his situation. I admired him greatly.

I always thought Ben's new job would work to even better fund the trip. If he was going to be drawing a good check, then that made the trip even more possible.

reply

But Ben said he was moving away & never coming back.

reply

But their trip was going to be in Europe. Even if Ben never set foot in California again, that didn't stop them from going to Europe together.

reply

Apparently in this film it did stop them. Once Ben tells Rocky he's moving, he tells him the trip is off.

reply

He was moving back to Michigan to start working. Taking the entire summer off to ride a motorcycle around Europe is not something that is usually feasible right after you have started a job. Ben was giving up on the plan to go to Europe.

I've totally thought Diana's parents were rude and snobbish towards Rocky and shouldn't have looked down on him because of his outer appearance, I could totally feel Rocky's pain with the rejection and disapproval he suffered by Diana's parents because I've been down that road many times before.

reply

Agree.

You’d figure they would be more understanding , since they had a blind daughter. You’d figure they, more then most, would know the difficulties and pain that comes from a physical defects. Instead, they seemed to scorn Rocky, like everyone else did

Diana's parents reminds me of a lot of people who I knew who were middle class but seemed focused on impressing the upper crust people yet they're rude and snobbish towards those who they feel are beneath them, I can't stand people like that.
