Worst performance ever by an actress

Martha Gerhman gives what has to be the single worst acting? performance in FX. A very entertaining movie but why is she in this?

reply

Just finished re-watching the movie. I came to IMDB to find out who the actress was who was so awful and if she ever got another part. Must agree with others, she just was not even remotely convincing in any element of her character.

When I first saw F/X, I was of the same mind as a lot of posters on this thread - with the kind of cast this movie has and the performances they gave, how in the wide, wide world of sports did THIS chick get in here, and why was she so consistently AWFUL?

Now, it's some years later, and I have seen the movie a dozen times or so. Martha Gehman is not as bad as people make out, and I say this for two reasons: One, many, many actors are only as good or as bad as their directors. Robert Mandel obviously wanted Martha to act the way she did, otherwise he would've edited her part down to a minimum or just done away with the role of Andy altogether. And Two: she is HARDLY the worst actress I have ever seen. There are far too many others who could compete for that particular award...and WIN!

If you think I'm wrong, here's a little homework for you - go check out these "actresses" in these other gems:

PIA ZADORA in THE LONELY LADY

PHYLLIS DAVIS in SWEET SUGAR

MAE WEST in SEXTETTE

MARGEAUX HEMINGWAY in LIPSTICK

ELIZABETH JAMES in BORN LOSERS

THEN come back and tell me how "bad" you think Martha Gehman is.

On the "positive" side, I think the best 'intentionally bad' performance I've ever seen was given by the excellent Parker Posey in SCREAM 3. It's probably one of the lamest sequels ever made at best, but I will watch it multiple times just for Parker. She KNOWS what kind of movie she's in and she acts her part accordingly. It has me busting a gut every time, knowing that she knows this and actually uses it to steal every scene she's in!

I appreciate that you are trying to defend her, but putting her in the same room with ten of the worst performances of all time doesn't really help her case. It's like having Woody Allen defend Roman Polanski in a case of statuatory rape.

reply

Her performance was awful but still, I found myself oddly attracted to her character and thinking I would like to pound the living daylights out of her. That marginally cute face, ample ass, etc. made her seem like she would probably be an easy lay.

Her acting doesn't excuse the story doing her character wrong. I saw this when it first came on television and was extremely angered by this. If I have the correct character in mind, she helps Bryan Brown's character through thick and thin. Then, he meets another male. They drive off, she is left behind, then, they receive the big payoff.

I saw this film when it initially came out in 1986, and at the time I thought it was clever and entertaining... before a few decades of life experience gave me enough knowledge to see some of the gaping plot-holes when the Mrs. and I re-watched it recently.

But as bad/crazy/dated as some of the plot is, the thing that had us laughing was exactly the subject of this thread: Martha Gehman's awful performance. To view acting of this calibre you would normally have to go to a third-grade assembly where the actors are costumed as tomatoes or ears of corn.

It is not necessary to say "worst performance ever by an actress" - this would be a subjective thing that could not be "proved" or an argument that could be won.

But it would be completely correct to say her performance is so horribly bad that the Mrs. and I said "quick! We have to look her up to see who that is and whether she ever acted again."

She is so bad that you're yanked out of your "suspension of disbelief."

It's the artistic equivalent of going to a fine art museum and viewing works of Rembrandt and other masters (these would be the performances of Brown, Adams, Orbach and Dennehy in this film) and then suddenly finding a child's crayon scribbling that would only be suitably displayed on a fridge.

It is interesting that someone else made the observation that the Executive Producer of F/X is none other than dear, departed Dodi Fayed, who was all of 21 at the time he got to put his show business savvy (or was it Daddy's influence and money?) to work. In fairness - he also produced Chariots of Fire and Hook.

All of the above is just tittering conjecture, but it IS interesting that for the publicity still photo of Martha Gerhman for this film - the photog credit is.... Dodi Fayed.

Can anyone else confirm that it is typical that publicity stills for a film are normally taken by Executive Producers rather than professional photographers or cameramen?

I'm watching this on tv right now. When Rollie drove off and left her and she yelled after him, it really hit me how awful she was. I had to come up here and see if others felt the same way.

so glad that I am not alone. No wonder Rollie ditched her for Leo, haha.

Some actress' forgettable performance in a 25-year-old action film has netted a five-year long ramble of disapproval? Like she burned down an animal shelter?

The things that wind people up.

And to the other dumb-John who "commended" another for pure ownage of a fellow poster: thanks for re-defining utterly pathetic.

Assuming your reaction would be along the same lines in seeing a dog kicked into the street.

1. Yes, I have an evil streak. I simply enjoy seeing people hanged out to roast.

2. No, I wouldn't enjoy seeing a dog kicked into the street. That's cruel. What kind of person do you think I am?

3. Ownage can be endless fun, especially when it's well written.

4. Martha Gehmans performance in this film is sub-par compared to your average fifth grader. It's not forgettable. If only it was. The problem is that it stands out like a teengage boner in a sunday church choir parade.

5. Any person defending her actions is simply deluded bordering on insanity. And any such person deserves seeing their dicks hanging in the wind.

6. People who take umbrage on messageboard contents should stay indoors when there's a risk of a frisk breeze outside, to preserve their fragile state of minds.

Her performance could not have been that bad because I never noticed it. I did notice, however, Jossie De Guzman's performance and I thought that was pretty bad. In fact, I just assumed this thread was about her until I checked the credits. Of course we should take into account that this is a very eighties movie and the acting techniques reflect that era.

I agree. I thought this thread was about the LEAD actress(tor?). If she were any more manish or unattractive, or untalented, etc. Sorry, but Bryan Brown is good, Brian Dennehy is good, Jerry Orbach is good... who the hell is this he/she thing in the love interest role? Hell, Bryan Brown got the hottie in "The Thorn Birds" and was a stud in "Cocktail", he wouldn't give this troll the time of day in 1986... (speaking of 'trolls' I didn't mean to be one!)
